The goal of this thesis is two-fold. The first goal is to conceptualize nature of the systems thinking skills of 4- to 6-year-old preschool children. Accordingly, an individual story reading and interview session was realized with 52 Turkish and German children. Then the nature of the children’s systems thinking skills were conceptualized by making use of a developmental rubric which was created as part of this study. The second goal of this study is to explore potential educational contextual key variables that may have an impact on systems thinking skills of young children. Accordingly, interacti on patterns among aspects of systems thinking skills within the Turkish and German mainstream and alternative educational contexts were examined by utilizing a comparative multiple case study approach. The findings of this study indicated that young children do show some signs of complex understanding regarding systems thinking in terms of detecting obvious gradual changes, two-step domino and/or multiple one-way causalities, and describing behavior of a balancing loop. However, their capacity was found to be limited in detecting a reinforcing loop, hidden components and processes, understanding system mechanisms, demonstrating multi-dimensional perspective, solving problem through high-leverage interventions, and predicting the future behavior of the system. In addition to these, findings indicated that age and lingual background of the child, duration of attending a preschool, facilitating children’s conflict resolution, seeing and touching the systems explicitly, project-based learning, critical thinking, cognitively challenging questions, teachers and lack of systems thinking approach could be related to the systems thinking skills of children.

Towards an appraisal of the academic literature on determinants of child labour in Turkey
Sağlam, Burcu; Vural, İpek Eren; Department of Social Policy (2014)
This thesis has two interrelated aims. First, it aims to assess the mainstream theoretical approaches that account for the causes of increasing significance of child labour. Secondly, it aims to locate the evolution of child within its political economic context of capitalist development and crisis in Turkey especially since the 1980s. The thesis argues that changing dynamics of capitalist development especially since the 1970s, (such as the internationalisation of capital, the growing dominance of money fo...

Robust quality metrics for assessing multimodal data
Konuk, Barış; Akar, Gözde; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2015)
In this thesis work; a novel, robust, objective, no-reference video quality assessment (VQA) metric, namely Spatio-Temporal Network aware Video Quality Metric (STNVQM), has been proposed for estimating perceived video quality under compression and transmission distortions. STN-VQM uses parameters reflecting the spatiotemporal characteristics of the video such as spatial complexity and motion. STN-VQM also utilizes parameters representing distortions due to compression and transmission such as bit rate and p...
Electromagnetic compatibility of electric power quality monitor according to EN 61326 standard
Yaman, Özgür; Ermiş, Muammer; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2007)
In this thesis; Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) of Electric Power Quality Monitor developed within the scope of National Power Quality Project has been investigated according to EN 61326 standard. Both immunity and emission tests have been carried out in EMC laboratories of ELDAS and ASELSAN for the device under test. Necessary counter measures such as using electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters and transient voltage suppressors, shielding the case of device with EMI protective materials have been ...
Intraday markets and potential benefits for Turkey
İlseven, Engin; Sevaioğlu, Osman; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014)
In this thesis work; the characteristics, applications, logic, and potential benefits of intraday markets are investigated comprehensively. The properties of intraday markets are examined, and within this framework the applications of intraday markets in Europe and the mechanism that is going to be applied in Turkey are discussed. Also, considering the increasing importance of intraday markets, the logic behind these markets is examined. In this respect, the uncertainties which cause imbalances in the balan...
