In the last years, railway systems are becoming more popular all over the world, especially in the European Union. Turkey has also started to develop completely domestic products and systems for the railway trains, signaling and infrastructure. Point machines are one of the critical safety devices for the railway signaling and infrastructure. They play an important role in the safe running of rail services. Hence, they have to be quick for the throwing and reliable for the locking of point blades. This study contains research about modern point machines commercially available in the market and investigations on some of these machines used by Turkish State Railways (TCDD) the major authority running the infrastructure in Turkey. The main objective of this study is to compare different railway point machines in terms of their constructional aspects. This assessment includes three main steps. The first step is to perform research about modern point machines and their operational characteristics. The second step is the detailed investigation of four different point machines that are currently used at the railways operated by TCDD in Turkey. The final step is about comparison of mainly constructional aspects of these investigated point machines for the purpose of preparing background and guidelines for the development of a novel and domestic point machine.

Examination of suitability of performance based contracts for the Turkish road maintenance sector
Ateş, Koray; Atasoy Özcan, Güzide; Öztürk, Hande Işık (2020-09-01)
Over the last decades, many countries have been in the search of new contracting types for the road maintenance sector to increase the efficiency and to reduce the cost. Lately, Performance based Contracting (PBC) became a popular approach for road maintenance (RM). Although there are many studies and cases that present the affirmative results of PBC, changing the RM system from the traditional contracting methods to PBC, is very compelling. Turkey has made huge investments in road construction sector and m...
Evaluation of Top Flange Bracing Systems for Curved Box Girders
Topkaya, Cem; Williamson, Eric B. (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2005-11-01)
In recent years, steel trapezoidal box girders for curved highway interchanges have become popular. For these bridge systems, significant steel girder cross-sectional stresses occur during the concrete casting sequence. To help resist construction loads, a lateral truss system is installed at a level close to the top flanges to form a "pseudo-closed" section, which has a higher torsional stiffness than an open U-section. Several recent incidents, ranging from the buckling of individual bracing members to th...
Evaluating the Relation Between Station Area Design Parameters and Transit Usage for Urban Rail Systems in Ankara, Turkey
Ozgur-Cevher, Ozge; Altintasi, Oruc; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-08-01)
Urban rail transit (URT) systems are particularly favoured by planners due to their potential in attracting car users. However, a URT investment must be complemented by land-use characteristics at macroscale (whole city) and design parameters at microscale (vicinity of the station). Despite the common referencing to key concepts (i.e. density, diversity and connectivity), the variability in their definitions and scales causes ambiguity in the determination of their quantified impact on URT ridership. Furthe...
Assessment of applicability of performance-based contracts in Turkey for road maintenance services

Türkiye de Şehirlerarası Yük Trafiği CO2 Emisyonlarının Tahmini
Özen, Murat; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye (Dergipark, 2013-01-01)
Recently, road freight transportation dominates the freight sector in many countries including Turkey, which is causing a growing concern about environmental and sustainability issues. To develop better policies, road freight emissions have to be determined. Such evaluations are very challenging in the absence of disaggregate commodity flow data, which is the case in Turkey. As a solution, to calculate truck freight transportation emissions a model that combines national level national freight transportatio...
