There is a noticeable increase in the emergence of non-deterministic search techniques that simulate natural phenomena into a numerical optimization technique in recent years. These techniques are used for developing structural optimization algorithms that are particularly effective for obtaining solutions to discrete programming problems. In this study amongst these techniques genetic algorithms, simulated annealing, evolution strategies, particle swarm optimizer, tabu search, ant colony optimization and harmony search are utilized to develop seven optimum design algorithms for real size rigidly connected steel frames. The design problems are formulated according to ASD-AISC (Allowable Stress Design Code of American Institute of Steel Institution).

Evaluation of Recent Improvements in Harmony Search based Structural Optimization Algorithms
Saka, M. P.; AYDOĞDU, İBRAHİM; Hasacebi, O. (2010-09-17)
Music-inspired harmony search algorithm is a recently developed metaheuristic technique. It has been extensively used in the development of structural optimization algorithms. Several enhancements are suggested to standard harmony search method. In this paper, firstly these improvements are summarized and later they are used to determine the optimum design of three dimensional steel frames. The design constraints are implemented according to LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistance Factor Design-American Institute of...
Harmony search algorithms in structural engineering

Harmony search method is widely applied in structural design optimization since its emergence. These applications have shown that harmony search algorithm is robust, effective and reliable optimization method. Within recent years several enhancements are suggested to improve the performance of the algorithm. Among these Mandavi has presented two versions of harmony search methods. He named these as improved harmony search method and global best harmony search method. Saka and Hasancebi (2009) have suggested...
Performance evaluation of metaheuristic search techniques in the optimum design of real size pin jointed structures
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Dogan, E.; Erdal, F.; Saka, M. P. (2009-03-01)
In recent years a number of metaheuristic search techniques have been widely used in developing structural optimization algorithms. Amongst these techniques are genetic algorithms, simulated annealing, evolution strategies, particle swarm optimizer, tabu search, ant colony optimization and harmony search. The primary goal of this paper is to objectively evaluate the performance of abovementioned seven techniques in optimum design of pin jointed structures. First, a verification of the algorithms used to imp...
Quantum Search in Sets with Prior Knowledge
Çalıkyılmaz, Umut; Turgut, Sadi; Department of Physics (2021-10-7)
Quantum search algorithm revolutionized the field by reducing the complexity significantly for the search problem. However, by not being able to decrease the complexity to logarithmic scales, this algorithm still needs a significant amount of time to solve the search problem for large sets. It is proven that the order of the time required to solve this problem cannot be reduced further but, making an improvement by some constant factor is still possible. This aim has been pursued by some scientists in the p...
Optimum design of steel sway frames to BS5950 using harmony search algorithm
Saka, M. P. (2009-01-01)
Harmony search method based optimum design algorithm is presented for the steel sway frames. The harmony search method is a numerical optimization technique developed recently that imitates the musical performance process which takes place when a musician searches for a better state of harmony. Jazz improvisation seeks to find musically pleasing harmony similar to the optimum design process which seeks to find the optimum solution. The optimum design algorithm developed imposes the behavioral and performanc...
