Elastic wave propagation through an area discontinuity of two dissimilar, bonded, semi-infinite circular rods is investigated analytically. In particular, the variations of the coefficients of stress reflection and transmission are determined in terms of the nondimensional cross sectional area and mechanical impedance parameters. The coefficients of energy flux reflection and transmission are also included. Then, the case is generalized to include a rigid mass attached at the discontinuity.

ANALYSIS OF MILLIMETER WAVE-GUIDES ON ANISOTROPIC SUBSTRATES USING THE 3-DIMENSIONAL TRANSMISSION-LINE MATRIX-METHOD
BULUTAY, C; PRASAD, S (1993-06-01)
Three-dimensional condensed asymmetrical node, variable grid, transmission-line matrix (TLM) method has been used in analyzing several millimeter waveguides on anisotropic substrates. The dispersion characteristics of image guides together with field and energy confinement properties at millimeter-wave frequencies have been investigated. Edge coupled microstrip line on a uniaxial substrate is analyzed for the even and odd mode dispersion characteristics. Finally the same analysis is repeated for bilateral f...
Numerical solution of nonlinear reaction-diffusion and wave equations
Meral, Gülnihal; Tezer, Münevver; Department of Mathematics (2009)
In this thesis, the two-dimensional initial and boundary value problems (IBVPs) and the one-dimensional Cauchy problems defined by the nonlinear reaction- diffusion and wave equations are numerically solved. The dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM) is used to discretize the IBVPs defined by single and system of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations and nonlinear wave equation, spatially. The advantage of DRBEM for the exterior regions is made use of for the latter problem. The differential quad...
Analytical solutions of shallow-water wave equations
Aydın, Baran; Kanoğlu, Utku; Department of Engineering Sciences (2011)
Analytical solutions for the linear and nonlinear shallow-water wave equations are developed for evolution and runup of tsunamis –long waves– over one- and two-dimensional bathymetries. In one-dimensional case, the nonlinear equations are solved for a plane beach using the hodograph transformation with eigenfunction expansion or integral transform methods under different initial conditions, i.e., earthquake-generated waves, wind set-down relaxation, and landslide-generated waves. In two-dimensional case, th...
Near-field scanning in the time domain on a spherical surface - A formulation using the free-space Green's function
Koc, S; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Buyukdura, OM (2001-10-01)
Two formulations for determining the characteristics of an unknown source of acoustic waves using the measurement of its field at its near zone are presented. The measurement in both cases is to be performed on a spherical scan surface which encapsulates the source. The first is for an ideal probe which measures the field at its location. The knowledge of the field is sufficient; its normal derivative is not required. In the second formulation a realistic probe is considered. This time it is required only t...
FORCED VIBRATIONS OF TRIPLY COUPLED, PERIODICALLY AND ELASTICALLY SUPPORTED, FINITE, OPEN-SECTION CHANNELS
Yaman, Yavuz (Elsevier BV, 2002-2)
An exact analytical method is presented for the analysis of forced vibrations of uniform, open-section, single- and multi-bay periodic channels. The centre of gravity and the shear centre of the channel cross-sections do not coincide, and hence the flexural vibrations in two mutually perpendicular directions and the torsional vibrations are all coupled. The ends of the channels and the periodic intermediate supports are modelled with springs having finite flexural and torsional stiffnesses. Single-point for...
