Three different boron containing materials, zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO(4)), and boron and silicon containing oligomer (BSi), were used to improve the flame retardancy of melamine cyanurate (MC) in a polyamide-6 (PA-6) matrix. The combustion and thermal degradation characteristics were investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 standard, thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All the three boron compounds showed no synergistic effect with MC, and only BPO(4) at high loadings showed comparable LOI values by increasing the dripping rate. For ZnB and BSi glassy film and char formation decreases the dripping rate and sublimation of melamine and give rise to low LOI. According to TGA-FTIR results, addition of boron compounds does not alter the gaseous product distribution of both MC and PA-6. The addition of boron compounds affects flame retardancy through physical means. It was noted from the TGA data that boron compounds reduced the decomposition temperature of both MC and PA-6, also affecting the flame retardancy negatively by premature degradation of MC at low temperatures. Effect of expandable graphite on flame retardant, thermal and mechanical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane composites filled with huntite&hydromagnesite mineral
Guler, Turkan; Tayfun, Umit; Bayramlı, Erdal; DOĞAN, Mehmet (2017-01-10)
The effect of expandable graphite (EG) was studied on the flame retardant, thermal and mechanical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) containing huntite&hydromagnesite (HH). According to the flammability tests results, the synergistic interaction was observed between HH and EG. The maximum limiting oxygen index (LOI value was observed at a ratio of 1:1 (HH:EG) and the highest vertical burning test (UL-94) rating of V0 was observed at a ratios of 4:1, 3:2 and 1:1. The synergistic interaction betwe...
Effects of nanoparticles on thermal degradation of polylactide/aluminium diethylphosphinate composites
Kaya, Hatice; Özdemir, Esra; Kaynak, Cevdet; Hacaloğlu, Jale (2016-03-01)
We investigated the thermal degradation characteristics of polylactide (PLA) aluminium diethylphosphinate (AlPi) composites involving SiO2, halloysite (HNT) and organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) via direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry. Presence of nanoparticles, SiO2, HNT and OMMT affected both thermal stability and relative yields of thermal degradation products of PLA/AlPi. The transesterification reactions and interactions between PLA and AlPi were depressed in the presence of SiO2 and HNT. The ...
Effects of Graphene Transfer and Thermal Annealing on Anticorrosive Properties of Stainless Steel
Oh, Jeong Hyeon; Han, Sangmok; Kim, Tae-Yoon; PARK, JONGEE; Öztürk, Abdullah; Kim, Soo Young (2017-11-01)
Stainless steel (STS) films were annealed in a thermal quartz tube and covered with graphene to improve their anticorrosive properties. Graphene was synthesized via the chemical vapor deposition method and transferred onto the surface of the STS film by the layer-by-layer approach. The structure of the STS film changed from alpha-Fe to gamma-Fe after annealing at 700 C for 1 h, resulting in an increase of 82.72% in the inhibition efficiency. However, one-layer graphene acted as a conductive pathway and ther...
Effect of Cu addition on the microstructural constituents and mechanical properties of twin roll cast AlFeMnSi alloys
Meydanoglu, Onur; Birbaşar, Onur; Ulus, Ali; Beyhan, Bariş; Kalay, Yunus Eren (2015-01-01)
In this study, the effect of copper addition on microstructural evolution, mechanical and corrosion properties of twin roll cast (TRC) AlFeMnSi alloy system mainly used in container foil applications was investigated. Microstructural characterization studies were conducted on as-cast, homogenization annealed and final products by employing optical and scanning electron microscopes. The mechanical properties of the samples obtained from compositional were determined at the thickness of final product by tensi...
Effect of Pd loading in Pd-Pt bimetallic catalysts doped into hollow core mesoporous shell carbon on performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells
Ficicilar, Berker; BAYRAKÇEKEN YURTCAN, Ayşe; Eroğlu, İnci (2009-08-01)
A significantly active Pd-Pt/carbon electrocatalyst for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells was synthesized by microwave irradiation using a hollow core mesoporous shell (HCMS) carbon as catalyst support that was prepared by template replication of core/shell spherical silica particles and two different carbon precursors. Pt/Pd percent weight ratios on carbon support were varied as 20/0, 15/5, 10/10, 5/15 to 0/20. As the average pore diameter of the carbon support was increased from 3.02 nm to 3.90 nm b...
