This paper aims to review the 'politics of the intimate' in the Turkish context. By looking at regulations and policy debates in the areas of sexuality, reproduction and family and partnership in the 2000s, it critically analyzes the scope and content of state policies, as well as the policy debates in these areas, from a gender and gender equality perspective. This analysis further emphasizes the interaction between neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism, two political rationalities that have come to play important roles in the shaping or regulation of public and private domains, and the relations within these domains, in the last decade in Turkey. This paper will suggest that given the intermesh of neoliberal and neoconservative rationalities, the noition of gender equality loses its significance, leaving disadvantaged groups open to the detrimental effects of dominant power relations.

The politicization of gender: from identity politics to post-identity
Kale, Nülüfer; Ecevit, Mehmet Cihan; Department of Gender and Women's Studies (2011)
The aim of this thesis study is to understand the significance of today’s feminist politics in Turkey for post-identity politics. When it is considered that identity politics is being widely practiced today, whereas there is still much vagueness regarding the ways of doing post-identity politics, in order to achieve the aim of this study it becomes necessary to make a critique of identity politics and to reveal post-identitarian tendencies through this critique of identity-based political mobilization. In t...
The Discourse structure of Turkish
Demirşahin, Işın; Zeyrek Bozşahin, Deniz; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2015)
This thesis investigates the structure of immediate discourse in Turkish. The first and fore- most question is how discourse is built. Are there components of discourse that constitute a predicate-argument structure, or is discourse realized by underlying non-structural ties that are merely made explicit by these components? If there is structure in discourse, what is the nature of this structure, and what is its complexity? For this purpose, we analyze the relations annotated in the Turkish Discourse Bank,...
The Capitalist Political Economy and Transformation of Public Spaces: The Case of Gençlik Parkı, Ankara
Büyükcivelek, Ahmet Burak (Alexandrine Press, 2017-06-01)
This paper explores the dialectical relationship between the Turkish political economy and the physical form and use of Gençlik Parkı (Youth Park) in Ankara. The spatiotemporal analysis starts with the establishment of Gençlik Parkı in 1923 when the park was created to be an intermediary between early republican ideals and society, and ends with the commodification of the park that transformed it into a quasi-public exclusive space under Islamic neoliberalism. It is demonstrated that the historical evolutio...
A critical evaluation of the third way and its reflections on Turkish Politics
Türk, Duygu; Yalman, Osman Galip; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2005)
This thesis aims to provide a critical evaluation of the Third Way and its reflections on Turkish politics. The Third Way emerged in the late 1990s with a claim to provide an alternative both to the old social democracy of welfare state period and to neo-liberalism. Based on a specific account of the radically changed world, the Third Way has maintained that the new conditions have rendered the old conceptualizations, as well as the old political positions, invalid. In this sense, this thesis argues that th...
