The extent of the thermally induced shrinkage during sintering of nominally homogeneous ceramic compacts depends upon the green density; compacts with a low green density shrink more than those with a higher density. Therefore, shape distortions of compacts with variable density during their sintering is inevitable. The overall shapes of various sintered alumina compacts, prepared using different types of alumina agglomerates, is described. The agglomerates were prepared using organic polymer [poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)] binders and the influence of the particle agglomerates size and the water content in the agglomerates is considered. The extent of the shape distortions in the cylindrical sintered compacts were reduced with the application of lubricants to the die walls. The agglomerate properties are shown to affect the overall shape of the sintered compacts significantly. The compacts, produced using the wet (plastisized) agglomerates, have the smallest shape distortions. A prediction of the sintered shape evolution is obtained using a first order model. The model predicts that the shape distortions in the sintered compacts increase with the increasing of the sintered density and a good agreement between the predicted and measured data is demonstrated. Free forming of locally laser heated parts
Özmen, Murat; Tekkaya, A. Erman; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
As metals have high formability at elevated temperatures, hot forming is preferred and widely used in manufacturing of complicated geometries. The term أhot formingؤ is usually used if the whole workpiece is processed at elevated temperatures. However, for certain products high formability is required only locally. Forming by local heating is proposed to provide ease of manufacturing of local forms on the workpiece. Also, tools can be simplified by this method. In this study, local laser heating procedures ...
EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF SINGLE-PHASE LIQUID FLOW AND HEAT TRANSFER IN MULTIPORT MINICHANNELS
Altinoz, Mesru; Güvenç Yazıcıoğlu, Almıla; Baker, Derek Keıth (2014-08-07)
Small channels have been an area of interest since the 1970s owing to their enhanced heat transfer characteristics. However a wide number of studies in literature show inconsistent results. In this work, an experimental set-up has been designed and constructed to investigate pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of single-phase water flow in rectangular multiport minichannels. Laminar flow inside three minichannels with different hydraulic diameters and different port numbers were examined under a...
Description of the PM process by using Ishikawa-analysis
Simon, Andrea; Kovács, Károly; Gür, Cemil Hakan; Pieczonka, Tadeusz; Gácsi, Zoltán (2013-01-01)
Composites are special materials which can provide specific individual properties such as high strength with low density or good thermal conductivity with low thermal expansion coefficient. Composites follow the constantly evolving and more complex expectations. In order to make a product with good quality, it is important to choose suitable materials and technology. In this research, powder metallurgy (PM), as one of the most common composite manufacturing technologies, was examined; which factors and mech...
Unprecedented irradiation resistance of nanocrystalline tungsten with equiaxed nanocrystalline grains to dislocation loop accumulation
El-Atwani, O.; Esquivel, E.; Aydoğan Güngör, Eda; Martinez, E.; Baldwin, J. K.; Li, M.; Uberuaga, B. P.; Maloy, S. A. (Elsevier BV, 2019-02-01)
Nanocrystalline metals are often postulated as irradiation tolerant materials due to higher grain boundary densities. The efficiency of these materials in mitigating irradiation damage is still under investigation. Here, we present an in-situ transmission electron microscopy with ion irradiation study on equiaxed 35 nm grained tungsten (NCW-35 nm) and compare its radiation tolerance, in terms of dislocation loop damage, to several other grades of tungsten with different grain sizes at two temperatures (RT a...
