The improvement in design technologies has enhanced the use of different fill materials in construction of the embankment dams. Rockfill is one of the most preferred fill materials for embankment dam. Also, use of different fill material such as sand-gravel has been preferred in recent years. Previous studies on concrete faced sand-gravel fill dam (CFSGD), results of the laboratory experiments and in-situ testing analysis display that using sand-gravel as a fill material is not only cost-effective but also safe and provides high quality natural construction material. In this study, settlement of Karacasu Dam, which is the first concrete faced sand-gravel fill dam in Turkey, is examined for “end of construction” and “reservoir impoundment” loading conditions. Deformations are determined by computing two-dimensional finite element analyses. Hardening soil model is utilized to obtain non-linear, stress dependent and inelastic behavior of the sand-gravel fill material. Deformations which are calculated by finite element analyses, are compared with the data observed by General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) for both end of the construction and reservoir impoundment periods. The comparison of the results indicates that calculated deformations are generally compatible with the observed ones.

Finite element analysis of deformation behavior of concrete faced Konya Afşar Hadimi dam and comparison of results with measurements
Kardeş, Doğuşcan; Çokça, Erdal; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
To eliminate the problem of scarcity of appropriate fill material in the vicinity of construction site, concrete faced dam is a commonly preferred alternative for embankment dams. Functioning as an impervious membrane, the concrete face makes it possible to use dumped rockfill, compacted rockfill or sand-gravel fill as the dam body material. In this study, deformation behavior of Konya Afşar Hadimi Dam, which is a concrete faced rockfill dam, was investigated by finite element analyses using Plaxis and Mida...
EMBODIED CARBON ASSESSMENT OF URBAN RAILWAY SYSTEMS IN TURKEY BASED ON MATERIAL QUANTIFICATION
Yüksel, Müge; Tanyer, Ali Murat; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2021-12-13)
Due to global sustainability movements, environmental impact assessments are steadily accelerating in the Architecture – Engineering – Construction (AEC) sector. In order to achieve the 2030 and 2050 carbon targets, laws and regulations are published by governments and decision makers to reduce carbon emissions. Nowadays, transportation is the second-largest contributor to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union, including Turkey. As a developing country, Turkey strives to catch not onl...
Deformation compatibility of masonry and composite materials
Bespalov, V. V.; Ucer, D.; Salmanov, I. D.; Kurbanov, I. N.; Kupavykh, S. V. (2018-01-01)
Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) are commonly used nowadays for strengthening deteriorated structures. The purpose of this research was to determine the combined behavior of masonry walls and reinforcing meshes together, according to their deformation characteristics. A sample wall with average masonry parameters and seven different common polymer nets on them were modeled in Abaqus Software. Moreover, a case study wall was also modeled according to the strength values obtained from direct testing of a demol...
