Chert, which is a crypto and/or microcrystalline sedimentary rock, may lead to alkali-silica reaction in concrete when the conditions are favorable. However, cherts vary in composition and consequently may demonstrate different reaction characteristic. In this study, eight different chert types were investigated. Accelerated mortar bar test, ASTM C 1260, was performed on aggregate blends of limestone and chert. Ten sets of mortar bars with varying amount of cherts, 1 to 100%, were tested for each chert type. Additionally, sonic velocity measurement and petrographic examination were conducted on the mortar bars. The mortar bar test revealed that all cherts show pessimum behavior with maximum expansion peak attained in the range of 5-15% chert content: the expansion due to the alkali-silica reaction increases up to pessimum content and decreases thereafter. The sonic velocity measurements and the petrographic examinations have supported the expansion data that the minimum velocity and the maximum cracking occur in the peak expansion range. The different testing methods have complemented each other that the pessimum content for all the cherts investigated was found to be 7.5-10%.

Investigation of seeded vertical gradient freeze (VGF) growth of CdZnTe bulk crystals

© 2022 Elsevier B.V.Due to the requirement for superheating above the melting point in the homogenization process of CdZnTe material, complete seed melting remains as a significant problem for the seeded vertical gradient freeze (VGF) growth of CdZnTe. In addition, due to the typical low single crystal yields in VGF growth of CdZnTe, obtaining single crystal seed material with desired geometries could be considered as a challenge. In this study, single crystal CdZnTe seeds of cylindrical geometry with 10 mm...
Development of a new short-term concrete prism test method (SCPT) to improve predictability for potential alkali reactivity of aggregates
Hafçı, Alkan; Turanlı, Lutfullah.; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) is a chemical deterioration process which happens in concrete due to the presence of reactive aggregate, sufficient alkalis and moisture. The analysis for the reactivity may be very difficult because AAR has sophisticated and slow progression behaviour. Analysing the aggregates’ structure in detail is primarily necessary before preparation of concrete mixture. Therefore, fast, simple, and reliable tests should be carried out. In the first step of the study, seven pilot new te...
Comparative study of high pressure and atmospheric acid leaching for the extraction of nickel and cobalt from refractory nickel laterite ores
Korkmaz, Kıvanç; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2014)
In this MSc thesis, the refractory minerals that may be present in limonitic nickel laterite ores will be tried to be leached under the optimum conditions of high pressure and atmospheric acid leaching. The results of the different methods of leaching to be obtained will be compared in terms of the Ni and Co extractions.
Aspects of urban seismic risks: a comparison of risk factors in the metropolitan cities of Turkey
Sönmez, Tuğçe; Balamir, Murat; Department of City and Regional Planning (2008)
Chronic seismic hazards and resulting secondary impacts are due to the geological conditions of Turkey and the nature of current response mechanisms. Local know-how of building and settlement that evolved over centuries eroded with the growth in population, and the introduction of reinforced concrete building economics. This makes cities the most vulnerable geographical and social entities in Turkey. A basic formal reference of disaster management is the National Seismic Hazard Map indicating zones of hazar...
Development of a predictive model for carbon dioxide sequestration in deep saline carbonate aquifers
Anbar, Sultan; Akın, Serhat; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2009)
Although deep saline aquifers are found in all sedimentary basins and provide very large storage capacities, a little is known about them because they are rarely a target for the exploration. Furthermore, nearly all the experiments and simulations made for CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers are related to the sandstone formations. The aim of this study is to create a predictive model to estimate the CO2 storage capacity of the deep saline carbonate aquifers since a little is known about them. To crea...
