The nature of analyte species collected on a cooled silica tube for atom-trapping atomic absorption spectrometric determination was investigated with the use of X-ray photoelctron spectroscopy (XPS). An XPS spectrum of gold deposited on atom-trapping silica tubes reveals a Au 4f(7/2) peak with a binding energy of 84.8 (+/-0.2) eV, which falls in the middle of the binding energies corresponding to zerovalent Au(0) at 84.0 eV and that of monovalent Au(I) at 85.2 eV, The corresponding energy for Au vapor deposited on silica is also 84.8 eV. Deposition of AuCl4- solution on silica results in two different Au 4f(7/2) peaks with binding energies of 84.8 and 87.3 eV corresponding, respectively, to Au(0) and Au(III), Deposition of the same AuCl4- solution on platinum metal again gives two peaks, this time at 84.4 and 87.0 eV energies corresponding again to Au(0) and Au(III), Combining all these data, we conclude that gold is trapped on atom-trapping silica surface as zerovalent Au(0) with a 0.8-eV matrix shift with respect to the metal surface, A similar 0.6-eV shift is also observed between the binding energy of 4f(7/2) Hg-2(2+) measured in Hg-2(NO3)(2) . 2H(2)O powder and that deposited on silica.

XPS characterization of Bi and Mn collected on atom-trapping silica for AAS
Suzer, S; Ertas, N; Ataman, Osman Yavuz (1999-04-01)
The chemical state of analyte species collected on a water-cooled silica tube during atom-trapping atomic absorption spectrometric determination is investigated with the use of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for Bi and Mn. Analysis of the Bi 4f(7/2) peak reveals that the chemical state of Bi is +3 during initial trapping (before the atomization stage), but an additional 0-valence state of Bi is also observed after the atomization stage. With the use of the measured Mn 2p(3/2) binding energy together...
X-ray-induced production of gold nanoparticles on a SiO2/Si system and in a poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix
Karadas, F; Ertaş, Gülay; Ozkaraoglu, E; Suzer, S (2005-01-04)
Prolonged exposure to X-rays of HAuCl4 deposited from an aqueous solution onto a SiO2/Si substrate or into a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix induces reduction of the Au3+ ions to Au-0 and subsequent nucleation to gold nanoclusters as recorded by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corresponding major oxidation product is determined as chlorine {HAuCl4(ads) + X-rays --> Au(ads) + (3/2)Cl-2(ads) + HCl(ads)}, which is initially adsorbed onto the surface but eventually diffuses out of the system into ...
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigation of conducting polymer blends
Suzer, S; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Hallam, KR; Allen, GC (1996-06-01)
Electrochemically prepared films of conducting polymers of polypyrrole and polythiophene and their blends with polyamide have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In the N1s region of the spectra of films containing polypyrrole the peak corresponding to N+ at 402.0 eV is separated from that of neutral N. The intensity of the N+ peak can be correlated with the electrical conductivity of the films and the spectroscopically derived ratio of F/N+ is close to 4 indicating that one BF4- dopant i...
Controlled assemble and microfabrication of zeolite particles on SiO2 substrates for potential biosensor applications
Öztürk, Semra; Turan, Raşit; Akata Kurç, Burcu (2008-12-04)
Zeolite nanoparticles were organized into functional entities on SiO2 substrates and microfabrication technique was tested to form patterns of zeolite nanoparticles on SiO2 using the electron beam lithography (EBL). The effect of different techniques for efficient zeolite assembly on the SiO2 substrates was investigated. For this purpose, three different assembly techniques were tested. The first two methods are spin-coating (SC) and ultrasound aided strong agitation (US) methods, which were tested using ba...

The photodegradation of irradiated PETG and PCCT model compounds namely Tm-CHDM-Tm and Tm-TMCD-Tm, where Tm refers to the methyl ester of terephthalic acid, CHDM refers to 1, 4-cyclohexanedimethanol, and TMCD refers to tetramethyl-1, 3-cyclobutanediol, was analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photodegradation products were characterized based on high resolution O(1s)x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra and the spectra of irradiated model compounds showed a decrease in the relative inte...
