High Speed Rail (HSR), a new intercity passenger mode in Turkey, has high travel time reduction potential and competes against both road and air travel modes. A survey among the current HSR users showed that pricing at intercity bus ticket level is a factor increasing the preferability of HSR. If HSR ticket price is more than bus ticket price, 60 0 of the HSR users stated to prefer HSR, while only 40 0 stated preference, if HSR is priced equal to air ticket prices. Binary logit models developed in the study suggested travel time reduction as a major factor affecting HSR choice. It was determined that Value of Time (VoT) estimations using the binary logit models vary among both HSR lines and different traveler groups.

Evaluation of factors affecting mode choice of highspeed railway (HSR) users in Turkey
Dalkıç, Gülçin; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye; Department of Civil Engineering (2017)
To change the current road dominancy in the intercity passenger transportation, Turkey has been establishing High-Speed Rail (HSR) services as a competitive mode since 2009. Currently there are four HSR lines connecting seven cities and three HSR lines under construction. In the scope of this study, a passenger survey was conducted at four stations of the currently serving HSR lines to obtain data on i) intercity mode choices of HSR users for different trip purposes, ii) alternative modes preferred in HSR c...
High-Speed Rail (HSR) Users and Travel Characteristics in Turkey
Celikkol-Kocak, Tumay; Dalkıç Melek, Gülçin; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye (Elsevier BV; 2017-05-05)
To change the current road dominancy in the intercity passenger transportation, Turkey has been establishing High-Speed Rail (HSR) services as a competitive mode since 2009. A user survey was conducted at four stations of the currently serving HSR lines to obtain data on i) intercity mode choices of HSR users for different trip purposes, ii) alternative modes preferred in HSR corridors and iii) user perspectives on modal service attributes (i.e. travel time, cost, safety, etc.). A significant share of first...
Evaluating Rail Passengers Sector in Turkey
Ekici, Üsame; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-1)
With the rapid development of railways in Turkey, the research of railway passenger demand forecasting has gained much importance in the recent years. Passenger demand forecasting for transport services is essential for better management and better resource planning. In this study, a time-series-model was established using Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) forecasting method and then a regression model was formed to forecast the intercity railway passenger flow in Turkey. The daily passenger...
Design considerations for modern railway stations; comparing Berlin, Beijing and Ankara
Atak, Zeynep; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2015)
High Speed train era in Turkey has started in 2009 with the Ankara-Eskisehir high speed rail line. From 2009 until 2015, a number of high speed railway and new station construction projects haves been implemented. And new high speed rail line projects are in planned. Location of the station in the city, its dimensions, security check points, ticket checking system, the size of the retail places within the station and some other functions are critical for the design of railway stations, however it is realize...
COMPETITIVENESS OF HSR IN TURKEY: CURRENT HSR CORRIDORS AND ESTIMATIONS FOR FUTURE ONES
Dalkıç Melek, Gülçin; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye (2018-12-01)
Turkey started the High-Speed Rail (HSR) services in 2009 and has four operating lines with three more lines expected to serve in the near future. This study aims to investigate the potential competitiveness of HSR against bus and airway alternatives in the future lines (Ankara-Bursa, Ankara-Izmir and Ankara-Sivas).
