The mechanism of boron effect on human transcription and translation has not been fully understood. In the current study it was aimed to reveal the role of boron on the expression of certain transcription factors that play key roles in many cellular pathways on human subjects chronically exposed to low amounts of boron. The boron concentrations in drinking water samples were 1.57 +/- 0.06 mg/l for boron group while the corresponding value for the control group was 0.016 +/- 0.002 mg/l. RNA isolation was performed using PAX gene RNA kit on the blood samples from the subjects. The RNA was then reverse transcribed into cDNA and analyzed using the Human Transcription Factors RT2 Profiler (TM) PCR Arrays. While the boron amount in urine was detected as 3.56 +/- 1.47 mg/day in the boron group, it was 0.72 +/- 0.30 mg/day in the control group. Daily boron intake of the boron and control groups were calculated to be 6.98 +/- 3.39 and 1.18 +/- 0.41 mg/day, respectively. The expression levels of the transcription factor genes were compared between the boron and control groups and no statistically significant difference was detected (P > 0.05). The data suggest that boron, intake at 6.98 +/- 3.39 mg/day, which is the dose at which beneficial effects might be seen, does not result in toxicity at molecular level since the expression levels of transcription factors are not changed. Although boron intake over this level will seem to increase RNA synthesis, further examination of the topic is needed using new molecular epidemiological data. (C) 2016 Elsevier GmbH. Investigation of neutron sensitivity of un-doped and Dy-doped CaB4O7 for thermoluminescence applications
Iflazoglu, Sera; Yılmaz, Ayşen; KAFADAR, VURAL EMİR; YAZICI, AHMET NECMEDDİN (2018-09-01)
In this study, thermoluminescence characteristics of un-doped and Dy-doped calcium tetraborate (CaB4O7) compounds are reported. The polycrystalline powder samples of un-doped and Dy-doped CaB4O7 were prepared by a solid-state reaction at high-temperature method. The identification and characteristics of the obtained compounds were determined by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared analysis, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The glow curves ...
Enantioselective synthesis of new chiral 2-aziridinyl phosphonates and studies of their biological activities
Doğan, Özdemir; Beksultanova, Nurzhan; ALTANLAR, NURTEN; Simsek, Duygu; KARABIYIK, HASAN (2017-02-15)
A new series of chiral aziridinyl phosphonates has been synthesized and evaluated for antibacterial and antifungal activities. For the synthesis, a Gabriel-Cromwell reaction was used to form aziridinyl phosphonates in 52-83% yield. In order to evaluate antibacterial and antifungal activities, MIC values were measured. Although most of the compounds showed insignificant activity, two of them provided low to moderate antifungal activity.
Physiological, biochemical and molecular analysis of wheat cultivars under boron treatments
Kayıhan, Ceyhun; Yücel, Ayşe Meral; Eyidoğan, Füsun; Department of Biotechnology (2014)
Many studies have described the physiological, biochemical and molecular responses to boron (B) toxicity and deficiency individually in plants. However, overall pattern of gene expression changes and their physiological and biochemical significances after high B, low B and supplementing artificial B-enriched fertilizer (Tarımbor) application have not been proposed up till now. In the present study, we assessed global changes in gene expression of two wheat cultivars Bolal-2973 and Atay-85 differing in their ...
Synergistic effect of boron containing substances on flame retardancy and thermal stability of intumescent polypropylene composites
Yılmaz, Ayşen; BAYRAMLI, ERDAL (2010-12-01)
The synergistic effect of four different boron containing substances, zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO4), boron silicon containing preceramic oligomer (BSi) and lanthanum borate (LaB), were studied to improve the flame retardancy of a polypropylene (PP) intumescent system composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER). The flame retardancy of PP composites was investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI). UL-94 standard, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter tests. Th...
Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Association of Antibiotics with the Aminoglycoside Acetyltransferase (3)-IIIb, a Resistance-Causing Enzyme
Norris, Adrianne L.; Özen, Can; Serpersu, Engin H. (2010-05-18)
The thermodynamic and kinetic properties of interactions of antibiotics with the aminoglycoside acetyltransferase (3)-IIIb (AAC) are determined with several experimental methods. These data represent the first such characterization of an enzyme that modifies the 2-deoxystreptamine ring common to all aminoglycoside antibiotics. Antibiotic substrates For AAC include kanamycin A, kanamycin B, tobramycin, sisomicin, neomycin B, paromomycin, lividomycin A, and ribostamycin. Kinetic studies show that kanamycin gr...
