In this study, thermoluminescence characteristics of un-doped and Dy-doped calcium tetraborate (CaB4O7) compounds are reported. The polycrystalline powder samples of un-doped and Dy-doped CaB4O7 were prepared by a solid-state reaction at high-temperature method. The identification and characteristics of the obtained compounds were determined by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared analysis, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The glow curves were obtained using a thermoluminescent reader. Neutron sensitivity, dose-response, and heating rate of CaB4O7 compounds were determined by using a bare Cf-252 mixed neutron + gamma (n + gamma) source, and dose response results are compared to those of Harshaw TLD-600 and TLD-700 neutron dosimeters ((LiF)-Li-6:Mg,Ti and (LiF)-Li-7:Mg,Ti). The sensitivity of CaB4O7:Dy (0.5%) sample is approximately 4.35 and 3.36 times higher than that of TLD-600 and TLD-700, respectively.

Physiological, biochemical and molecular analysis of wheat cultivars under boron treatments
Kayıhan, Ceyhun; Yücel, Ayşe Meral; Eyidoğan, Füsun; Department of Biotechnology (2014)
Many studies have described the physiological, biochemical and molecular responses to boron (B) toxicity and deficiency individually in plants. However, overall pattern of gene expression changes and their physiological and biochemical significances after high B, low B and supplementing artificial B-enriched fertilizer (Tarımbor) application have not been proposed up till now. In the present study, we assessed global changes in gene expression of two wheat cultivars Bolal-2973 and Atay-85 differing in their ...
Biological effects of tolerable level chronic boron intake on transcription factors
BOYACIOĞLU, SEDA ÖRENAY; KORKMAZ, MEHMET; Kahraman, Erkan; Yildirim, Hatice; Bora, Selin; Ataman, Osman Yavuz (2017-01-01)
The mechanism of boron effect on human transcription and translation has not been fully understood. In the current study it was aimed to reveal the role of boron on the expression of certain transcription factors that play key roles in many cellular pathways on human subjects chronically exposed to low amounts of boron. The boron concentrations in drinking water samples were 1.57 +/- 0.06 mg/l for boron group while the corresponding value for the control group was 0.016 +/- 0.002 mg/l. RNA isolation was per...
Investigation of chemopreventive and apoptotic characteristics of turkish medicinal plant rheum ribes
Uyar, Pembegül; Çoruh, Nursen; İşcan, Mesude; Department of Biotechnology (2011)
Rheum species are medicinally important plants due to the presence of anthracene derivatives and in this study antioxidative, cytotoxic, apoptotic and chemopreventive characteristics of R. ribes extracts were evaluated. R. ribes shoot and root dry powder samples were prepared and extracted with ethyl acetate, ethanol and water. The extracts were revealed to be a potential scavenger of DPPH radicals and the chemical composition of the extracts was quantified by colorimetric determination of total phenol (GAE...
Study on the properties of crosslinking of poly(ethylene oxide) and hydroxyapatite-poly(ethylene oxide) composite
Banat, R; Tincer, T (2003-10-10)
This study covers the crosslinking of poly-(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and its composite with calcium hydroxyapatite (HA), their mechanical and swelling properties, and morphology. Sheets of the composites of PEO (two different grades with M-v: 5x10(6) and 2x10(5)) and HA and neat PEO were prepared by compression molding. The prepared composite. and. PEO (0.1-mm-thick) sheets were crosslinked with exposure of UV-irradiation in the presence of a photoinitiator, acetophenone (AP). This simple method for crosslinki...
Investigation of the effect of ghrelin on bone fracture healing in rats
Erener, Tamer; CERİTOĞLU, KUBİLAY UĞURCAN; AKTEKİN, CEM NURİ; Dalgic, Ali Deniz; Keskin, Dilek; GENECİ, FERHAT; Ocak, Mert; Bilecenoğlu, Burak; Hücümenoğlu, Sema; Çaydere, Muzaffer; Şeneş, Mehmet; Sezgin, Özge (2021-01-01)
Ghrelin is known to have effects on proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts and improvement of bone mineral density in rats. However, no experimental research on ghrelin's effects on fracture healing has been reported. In this context, the effect of ghrelin on the union of femoral shaft fractures was examined in this study by evaluating whether ghrelin will directly contribute to fracture healing. Forty male Wistar-Albino rats were divided into two groups as control and experimental (ghrelin treate...
