Novel donor-acceptor-donor type polymers containing azobenzene group in polymer backbone chains were synthesized and their electrochromic properties were investigated. To increase the strength of the acceptor unit, fluorinated azobenzene containing donor-acceptor-donor type polymer was also synthesized. Cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry studies showed that poly((E)-1,2-bis(4-(4-hexylthiophen-2-yl)phenyl)diazene) (P2) and poly((E)-1,2-bis(2-fluoro-4-(4-hexylthiophen-2-yl)phenyl) diazene) (P3) were multichromic and the polymer containing fluorine group showed p- and n-doping properties, hence they are promising candidates for various applications.

High optical transparency in all redox states: Synthesis and characterization of benzimidazole and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene containing conjugated polymers
Zaifoglu, Buket; Sendur, Merve; Unlu, Naime Akbasoglu; Toppare, Levent Kamil (2012-12-15)
The synthesis of a novel monomer based on benzimidazole and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene moieties, 4'-tert-butyl-4,7-di(thieno[3,2-b]thiophen-2-yl)spiro[benzo[d]imidazole-2,1'-cyclohexane] (TTBI), and its electrochemical polymerization are reported. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies of the polymer were investigated. The high optical transparency and low coloration efficiency during oxidation and reduction processes make the polymer a great candidate for hole-injection layers in light-emitting dio...
Photovoltaic properties of benzotriazole containing alternating donor–acceptor copolymers: Effect of alkyl chain length
Baran, Derya; Balan, Abidin; Stubhan, Tobias; Ameri, Tayebeh; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Brabec, Christoph J. (Elsevier BV, 2012-12)
A series of variable alkyl chain length substituted donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers with thiophene ring as the donor and benzotriazole moiety as the acceptor has been investigated in bulk heterojunction solar cells. The optical and electrochemical properties showed that the absorption onsets and the energy levels of the copolymers were not affected by alkyl substitution revealing 1.9 eV of optical band gap. The morphologies of the blend film can be fine-tuned by increasing the chain length attached...
Electrochromic and photovoltaic applications of conjugated polymers
Apaydın, Doğukan Hazar; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2012)
Three new azobenzene containing conjugated monomers were designed and synthesized. Resulting monomers were characterized by means of 1H NMR and 13C NMR techniques. Monomers (E)-1,2-bis(4-(thiophen-2-yl)phenyl)diazene (M1), (E)-1,2-bis(4-(4-hexylthiophen-2-yl) phenyl) diazene (M2) and (E)-1,2-bis(2-fluoro-4-(4-hexylthiophen-2-yl)phenyl) diazene (M3) were electrochemically polymerized using cyclic voltammetry to give polymers P1, P2 and P3. The polymers were subjected to spectroelectrochemical and kinetic stu...
Donor-Acceptor Polymer with Benzotriazole Moiety: Enhancing the Eleetrochromic Properties of the "Donor Unit"
Balan, Abidin; Günbaş, Emrullah Görkem; Durmus, Asuman; Toppare, Levent Kamil (2008-12-23)
A new donor-acceptor type polymer poly(4,7-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-2-dodecyl-2H-benzo [1,2,3] triazole) (PBEBT) was synthesized and its electrochromic properties were investigated. Spectroelectrochemistry studies for PBEBT showed an absorption maximum at 618 nm which is nearly identical to that of poly(ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) where polymer has a saturated blue color in its neutral state. However, PBEBT film revealed better properties than that of PEDOT in terms of optical contr...
Synthesis, spectroscopic and electrochemical studies of perylene containing conjugated copolymers
Bayseç, Şebnem; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yılmaz, Levent; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2013)
The synthesis , spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of a series of donor-acceptor (DA) type polymers by changing the donor unit (thiophene, dithienopyrrole) polymer backbone were investigated. The synthesized CoP1 and CoP2 were designed to investigate the effect of copolymerization and insertion of perylene tetracarboxylic dimide (PDI) on the structure of benzotriazole (BTz) based polymers. For CoP1 1,7-dibromo-perylene diimide,4,7-dibromo-2-dodecyl-2H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole and 2,5 bis(tributylsta...
