Due to the rapidly growing population of the city of Ankara (Turkey) and increased traffic congestion, it has become necessary to widen the Ankara-Eskisehir (E-90) highway connecting the newly built areas west of the city to the city center. During widening, several cut slopes were formed along the highway route. As a result, some instability problems (small-sized rock falls/sliding, sloughing, raveling) produced detachment zones along a cut slope in highly jointed, folded and sheared limestone, causing local degradation of the cut slope. Identification of the areas that are likely to detach from the cut slope in the future is considered to be very important for the application of remedial measures. For this purpose, the relationships between the existing detachment zones and various parameters (e.g., point load strength index, weathering, block size, daylighting, shear zone) were investigated using GIS-based statistical detachment susceptibility analyses in order to predict the further aerial extension of the detachment zones with time. During the overlay analyses, statistical index and weighting factor methods were used. The outcomes of the analyses were compared and evaluated with the field observations to check the reliability of the methods and to assess the detachment zones that may develop in the future. The detachment susceptibility map without the block-size layer gives the best result and indicates some risky zones where detachments are likely to occur in the future. Recommendations on remedial measures of the cut slope should consider these risky zones.

Assessment of degradation and stability of a cut slope in limestone, Ankara-Turkey

Assessment of degradation mechanism and stability of a cut slope in jointed and sheared limestone along Ankara-Eskişehir E90 highway
Öztekin, Burak; Topal, Tamer; Department of Geological Engineering (2004)
Due to rapidly growing population of Ankara city (Turkey) and traffic load, it is required to widen some of the existing highways. One of them is Ankara-Eskisehir (E-90) highway that connects highly populated areas to the city center. During widening, several cut slopes were formed along the highway route. However, some instability problems such as small-sized rock falls and rock detachments have occurred along a cut slope in highly jointed, folded and sheared limestone. They caused local degradation of the...
Ankara’daki Kentsel Büyüme ve Saçaklanmanın Verimli Tarım Topraklarının Amaç Dışı Kullanımına Etkisi
Sezgin , Dinçer; Varol, Çiğdem (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2012-6-1)
In Turkey, the pace of industrialization and the rapid increase of urban population cause cities and their hinterland to expand, thus some of the urban functions are located outside the urban settlement boundaries. The discontinuous and disjointed settlements lead to a new growth model in the metropolitan, namely the urban sprawl. This growth mainly affects and transforms the agricultural land around cities, which is a vital natural resource for the continuity of ecosystems, and thus, has to be used efficie...
Residential transformation leading to gentrification : cases from İstanbul
Uzun, Cemile Nil (Palgrave Macmillan, Cham, 2020-04-01)
Many cities in Turkey are facing the problems of a “transforming” city instead of a “growing” city since the 1980s. Planners and policy-makers are dealing with the impact of changes in residential areas. In Istanbul, gentrification has been a significant type of transformation since the late 1980s, leading to notable residential divisions based on socioeconomic status. Urban redevelopment projects, on the other hand, have been important tools for controlling the transformation of residential areas, especial...
Value assessment for cotton-based industrial heritage in Adana
Aynal Arcı, Elvan; Özgönül, Nimet; Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Department of Architecture (2019)
The cotton-based industrial sites that effected urban development of Adana since the middle of the 19th century, were being persisted in the city center due to the extension of the urban area. Vast majority of cotton-based industry sites, that varying types of production occurred, having diverse area sizes and locations, and built in different periods, were ceased production or/and demolished. The three of the current sites were registered as cultural property and only one of them is being conserved. These ...
