A detailed seismic performance assessment procedure has been developed for reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings with masonry infill walls. The procedure is based on member damage functions, in terms of interstory drift ratios. These functions are developed for the primary components, namely, columns, beams, and infill walls. For developing these functions, analytical investigations to determine the influence of several parameters on the damageability of components were combined with experimental data. A new approach has been developed to synthesize component damage states to determine the story and eventually the building level performance states. The procedure has been calibrated and compared with other procedures by predicting the observed performance of three buildings exposed to recent earthquakes in Turkey. It is concluded that the developed procedure can satisfactorily predict the damage experienced by most of the components of the studied buildings. Moreover, the procedure reasonably captured the observed building damage states. Accordingly, the developed procedure can be used for a reliable performance assessment as well as performance-based design of RC frame structures.

Seismic upgrading of reinforced concrete frames with structural steel elements
Özçelik, Ramazan; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
This thesis examines the seismic internal retrofitting of existing deficient reinforced concrete (RC) structures by using structural steel members. Both experimental and numerical studies were performed. The strengthening methods utilized with the scope of this work are chevron braces, internal steel frames (ISFs), X-braces and column with shear plate. For this purpose, thirteen strengthened and two as built reference one bay one story portal frame specimens having 1/3 scales were tested under constant grav...
Analytical study on seismic retrofitting of reinforced concrete buildings using steel braces with shear link
Durucan, Cengizhan; Dicleli, Murat (2010-10-01)
This paper is focused on a proposed seismic retrofitting system (PRS) configured to upgrade the performance of seismically vulnerable reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. The PRS is composed of a rectangular steel housing frame with chevron braces and a yielding shear link connected between the braces and the frame. The retrofitting system is installed within the bays of an RC building frame to enhance the stiffness, strength and ductility of the structure. The PRS and a conventional retrofitting system usin...
A detailed seismic performance assessment procedure for RC frame buildings
Yakut, Ahmet (2005-06-01)
A detailed seismic performance assessment procedure has been developed for RC frames with masonry in-fill walls. The procedure is based on member damage functions developed for the primary components: columns, beams and in-fill walls. Investigations carried out to determine the influence of a number of parameters on the damageability of components were combined with experimental data to develop component damage functions expressed in terms of member deformations. The component damage states are combined tak...
Seismic vulnerability assessment using regional empirical data
Yakut, Ahmet; Yucemen, M. Semih (2006-08-01)
This article presents a procedure developed for the seismic performance assessment of low- to mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings in Turkey. The past performance of reinforced concrete buildings during major earthquakes have been compiled and analysed comprehensively using statistical procedures in order to study the empirical correlation between the significant damage inducing parameters and the observed damage. A damage database of nearly 500 representative buildings experiencing the 1999 Kocaeli and D...
