A detailed seismic performance assessment procedure for RC frame buildings

A detailed seismic performance assessment procedure has been developed for RC frames with masonry in-fill walls. The procedure is based on member damage functions developed for the primary components: columns, beams and in-fill walls. Investigations carried out to determine the influence of a number of parameters on the damageability of components were combined with experimental data to develop component damage functions expressed in terms of member deformations. The component damage states are combined taking into account their importance to determine the story and building level damage states used to assess its performance. The procedure has been calibrated and compared with other procedures by predicting the observed performance of buildings exposed to recent earthquakes in Turkey. It was observed that the damage experienced by most of the components of these buildings was predicted satisfactorily, and that the observed building damage states were captured. It has been applied to several existing representative buildings located in Zeytinburnu to evaluate their performance under an expected future earthquake. The procedure can be used for a reliable performance assessment as well as performance-based design of RC frame structures.

Vulnerability assessment of reinforced concrete moment resisting frame buildings
Erduran, Emrah; Yakut, Ahmet (2007-04-01)
A detailed seismic performance assessment procedure has been developed for reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings with masonry infill walls. The procedure is based on member damage functions, in terms of interstory drift ratios. These functions are developed for the primary components, namely, columns, beams, and infill walls. For developing these functions, analytical investigations to determine the influence of several parameters on the damageability of components were combined with experimental data. A...
Preliminary seismic performance assessment procedure for existing RC buildings
Yakut, Ahmet (2004-08-01)
A preliminary procedure to assess rapidly the likely seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete buildings is presented. In this procedure, a Capacity Index is computed considering the orientation, size and material properties of the components comprising the lateral load resisting structural system. This index is then modified by several coefficients that reflect the quality of workmanship and materials, and architectural features. The procedure has been tested and calibrated based on the data comp...
A comparative structural and architectural analysis of earthquake resistant design principles applied in reinforced concrete residential buildings in Turkey
Özmen, Cengiz; Ünay, Ali İhsan; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2008)
The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that it is possible to design earthquake resistant residential structures without significant compromises in the spatial quality and economic viability of the building. The specific type of structural system that this thesis focuses on is the reinforced concrete skeleton system. The parametric examples and key studies that are used in this research are chosen among applied projects in the city of Bolu. This city is chosen due to its location on the North Anatolian Fa...
A Computer vision based method for semi-automated rebar detection and measurement of reinforced concrete columns /
Hassan, Muhammad Usman; Kurç, Özgür; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
As-built information of reinforced sections is necessary to ascertain structural characteristics from load carrying capacity, serviceability, structural integrity and adherence to code perspective. The objective of this research is to develop a semi-automated structural information acquisition method that can be used to determine as-built information regarding rebar grids of reinforced concrete columns. The technique involves application of photogrammetry, image processing and computer vision knowledge to o...
Analytical study on seismic retrofitting of reinforced concrete buildings using steel braces with shear link
Durucan, Cengizhan; Dicleli, Murat (2010-10-01)
This paper is focused on a proposed seismic retrofitting system (PRS) configured to upgrade the performance of seismically vulnerable reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. The PRS is composed of a rectangular steel housing frame with chevron braces and a yielding shear link connected between the braces and the frame. The retrofitting system is installed within the bays of an RC building frame to enhance the stiffness, strength and ductility of the structure. The PRS and a conventional retrofitting system usin...
