Comparison of phosphorus reduction alternatives in control of nutrient concentrations in Lake Uluabat (Bursa, Turkey): Partial versus full sediment dredging

Aksoy, Ayşegül
In this study, Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP) was used to simulate the impacts of various phosphorus (P) load reduction scenarios on nutrient concentrations in Lake Uluabat, a Ramsar site (a wetland of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention), including sediment dredging options and source reduction. The model was calibrated for various water constituents including ortho-phosphate (PO43-) and nitrate (NO3-). The calibrated model was used as a management tool to predict the nutrient concentrations and water quality conditions in the lake for different P management alternatives. Results indicated that due to heavy sediment load, sediment dredging may be required to improve the water quality and control eutrophication in short term. However, it was observed that partial sediment dredging combined with other P load reduction alternatives could have similar overall effects compared to full sediment dredging in long term. Therefore, partial sediment dredging could be used as an alternative P control strategy when applied together with other P load control options. (C) 2012 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Trend Analyses of Meteorological Variables and Lake Levels for Two Shallow Lakes in Central Turkey
YAĞBASAN, ÖZLEM; Demir, Vandettin; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2020-02-01)
Trend analyses of meteorological variables play an important role in assessing the long-term changes in water levels for sustainable management of shallow lakes that are extremely vulnerable to climatic variations. Lake Mogan and Lake Eymir are shallow lakes offering aesthetic, recreational, and ecological resources. Trend analyses of monthly water levels and meteorological variables affecting lake levels were done by the Mann-Kendall (MK), Modified Mann-Kendall (MMK), Sen Trend (ST), and Linear trend (LT) ...
Rapid recovery of a shallow hypertrophic lake following sewage effluent diversion: lack of chemical resilience
Beklioğlu, Meryem; Moss, B (1999-01-01)
Total phosphorus budget and studies on dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations have been made for a small, hypertrophic, shallow lake, Little Mere, for a year prior to effluent diversion and three years following effluent diversion. Considerable resilience in phosphate concentrations was expected from experiences elsewhere with shallow lakes. Pre-diversion clear water was associated with a high dominance of large-bodied Daphnia magna due to an absence of fish in the relatively low-oxygen conditions. Une...
Analysis of techniques to limit saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers
Başdurak, Nüvit Berkay; Motz, Louis H. (2007-01-01)
In this study, saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers and prevention techniques were investigated using a new computer model, the Sea Water Intrusion (SWI) package (Bakker and Schaars, 2005), which simulates three-dimensional regional seawater intrusion in coastal multi-aquifer systems. Prevention methods consisting of injection wells, extraction wells, a combination of injection and extraction wells, and a subsurface barrier were evaluated as means of controlling saltwater intrusion by using SWI to simula...
Application of the bentix index in assessing ecological quality of hard substrata: a case study from the Bosphorus Strait, Turkey
KALKAN, E.; KARHAN, S.U.; MUTLU, E.; SIMBOURA, N.; BEKOLET, M. (National Documentation Centre (EKT), 2007-6-1)
In this paper, a biotic index (Bentix) has been used for the assessment of ecological quality status of shallow water hard substrate benthic ecosystems affected by coastal sewage discharges in the Bosphorus Strait. A significant difference was observed between the control and the discharge stations with regard to Bentix values (Mann-Whitney U Test, p=0.002) and ecological quality status of the discharge stations was worse than that of controls. The index values revealed that sewage discharges caused ser...
Assessment of the effect of mineralogy on the geotechnical parameters of clayey soils: A case study for the Orta County, Çankırı, Turkey
Akgün, Haluk; Arslan Kelam, Arzu; Oner, Gokalp; Koçkar, Mustafa Kerem (2018-11-01)
The purpose of this study is to investigate and relate the geotechnical parameters with the mineralogical properties of the Miocene and Plio-Quaternary (Pliocene to Quaternary) lacustrine and fluvial sediments, particularly clayey soils in the Orta County, cankiri. The study area is located about 110 km northeast of Ankara which is the capital city of the Republic of Turkey and Orta is a small county of cankiri. The study area is a structural depression in the northern part of the Orta plain which is filled...
