Coherency strain effects on TEM images of composite precipitates in Al-Li-Zr alloys

1996-09-15
Anomalous superlattice dark-field images of composite precipitates consisting of a dark core surrounded by a bright shell in Al-2.52Li-0.15Zr alloys, has been investigated by many beam dynamical image simulations employing a scattering matrix approach. The coherency strain field in the shell of the precipitate, as well as in the matrix, has been calculated by use of relations derived, and these are incorporated into the image calculations to determine whether the unexpected images can be elucidated by the coherency strain field of the precipitates. It has been found that the coherency strain field may modify the observed composite precipitate images, but it definitely cannot be the origin of the observed anomaly in these images. It has been also shown by the image matching technique, that the mismatch between the beta' (Al3Zr) precipitates and aluminium matrix in Al-Li-Zr alloys should have a value of about 0.3%.

Mechanical behaviour of Al2O3-ZrO2 minicomposite reinforced glass matrix optomechanical composite
Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi (Informa UK Limited, 2003-08-01)
To understand the effect of a 'mesh-structured reinforcement' on the optical and mechanical properties of optomechanical composites, a unidirectional Al2O3 fibre-ZrO2 matrix minicomposite reinforced glass matrix optomechanical composite has been fabricated. By regular alignment of the minicomposites in the glass matrix as part of the 'mesh structure' a high degree of optical transparency is obtained in the composite; this transparency is proportional to its 'optical window' regions. The mesh structured rein...
COARSENING OF DELTA' (AL3LI) AND COMPOSITE PRECIPITATES IN AN AL-2.5-PERCENT LI-0.15-PERCENT ZR ALLOY
Aydınol, Mehmet Kadri (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1994-01-01)
The early stage coarsening behaviour of delta' (Al3Li) precipitates and composite precipitates, consisting of beta' (Al3Zr) core enveloped by a delta' shell, in an Al-2.5% Li-0.1 5% Zr alloy has been studied at 443, 473 and 503 K by conventional transmission electron microscopy using superlattice dark-field images. Coarsening kinetics of delta' precipitates was found to exhibit considerable deviation from the t1/3 law corresponding to diffusion control at 473 and 503 K. This deviation may be explained eithe...
Plastic deformation induced microstructure evolution through gradient enhanced crystal plasticity based on a non-convex Helmholtz energy
Klusemann, Benjamin; Yalçınkaya, Tuncay (Elsevier BV, 2013-09-01)
A gradient crystal plasticity model in the framework of continuum thermodynamics and rate variational formulation is presented for the description of plastic deformation patterning in a system with non-convex energetic hardening. The paper focuses on the extension of the 1D deformation patterning analysis of Yalcinkaya et al. (2011) to 2D for monotonic loading histories. Solution algorithm is based on the simultaneous solution of displacement and plastic slip fields, which have been considered as primary va...
The role of amorphous precursor in phase selection hierarchy in marginal metallic glasses
YILDIRIM, CİHAN; KUTSAL, M.; OTT, R. T.; BESSER, M. F.; KRAMER, M. J.; Kalay, Yunus Eren (Elsevier BV, 2016-12-15)
The solid state amorphous structure and devitrification products of Al90Tb10 alloys produced by Cu block meltspinning and magnetron sputtering were investigated by a combined study of differential scanning calorimetry, in-situ X-ray diffraction and conventional transmission electron microscopy. The as-prepared specimens were found to be fully amorphous according to the electron and X-ray diffraction. The thermal analysis and in-situ XRD analyses of the amorphous samples having the same chemistry but differe...
Microstructural and texture evolution during thermo-hydrogen processing of Ti6Al4V alloys produced by electron beam melting
Dogu, Merve Nur; ESEN, ZİYA; Davut, Kemal; Tan, Evren; Gumus, Berkay; Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi (Elsevier BV, 2020-10-01)
The present study was conducted to reveal the effects of building angles and post heat-treatments (2-step Thermo-Hydrogen Processing (THP) and conventional annealing treatment) on the density, microstructure and texture of Ti6Al4V alloy parts produced by Electron Beam Melting (EBM). The results showed that regardless of the building angle; the density, microstructure and crystallographic texture (defined with respect to building angle) of the as-produced samples were identical; having Widmanstatten a struct...
