In recent years, steel, trapezoidal box-girders for curved highway interchanges have been used extensively. For these structural systems, the majority of the steel girder cross-sectional stresses occur during the concrete pouring sequence. This paper describes a comprehensive study on the behavior of curved girders during construction. Data collected for the current research shows significant differences between the measured and predicted quantities, particularly for later pours. An overview of the steel-concrete interface behavior at early concrete ages and the development of an analytical tool to predict the response of systems with semi-cured concrete are given. Field monitoring of two bridges during construction is presented. The measured results were compared to analytical predictions obtained using software developed specifically under this research to address deficiencies with currently available analytical tools. Accounting for strength and stiffness gained throughout the construction process, the developed software is able to accurately capture girder stresses during construction,

Evaluation of Top Flange Bracing Systems for Curved Box Girders
Topkaya, Cem; Williamson, Eric B. (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2005-11-01)
In recent years, steel trapezoidal box girders for curved highway interchanges have become popular. For these bridge systems, significant steel girder cross-sectional stresses occur during the concrete casting sequence. To help resist construction loads, a lateral truss system is installed at a level close to the top flanges to form a "pseudo-closed" section, which has a higher torsional stiffness than an open U-section. Several recent incidents, ranging from the buckling of individual bracing members to th...
Seismic retrofitting of highway bridges in Illinois using friction pendulum seismic isolation bearings and modeling procedures
Dicleli, Murat (Elsevier BV, 2003-07-01)
In this paper, the economical and structural efficiency of friction pendulum bearings (FPB) for retrofitting typical seismically vulnerable bridges in the State of Illinois is studied. For this purpose, a bridge was carefully selected by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to represent typical seismically vulnerable bridges commonly used in the State of Illinois. A comprehensive structural model of the bridge was first constructed for seismic analysis. An iterative multi-mode response spectrum ...
Development of a graphical user interface for composite bridge finite element analysis
Güven, Deniz; Topkaya, Cem; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
Curved bridges with steel/concrete composite girders are used frequently in the recent years. Analysis of these structural systems presents a variety of challenges. Finite element method offers the most elaborate treatment for these systems, however its use is limited in routine design practice due to modeling requirements. In recent years, a finite element program named UTrAp was developed to analyze construction stages of curved/straight composite bridges. The original Graphical User Interface could not b...
Seismic response of multi-span highway bridges with two-column reinforced concrete bents including foundation and column flexibility
Yılmaz, Taner; Caner, Alp; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
Seismic design of highway bridges has improved as a result of the experience gained from large earthquakes of the last thirty years. Ductility demand and reserved capacity are extremely important response measures used in new bridge designs to assess target damage levels. However, the application of practical design approaches specified in bridge design codes is not well-defined for bridges over flexible foundations. Within the scope of this research, thirty two bridge models having varying column aspect ra...
Behavior of girder floor beam connections in prestressed concrete pedestrian bridges subjected to lateral impact loads
Baran, Eray; French, Catherine (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2007-11-01)
Each year a large number of concrete bridges are subjected to impact by overheight vehicles or vehicles carrying overheight objects. Most bridge owners in the United States are concerned with the increasing trend of bridges impacted by overheight vehicles, thereby increasing the urgency to evaluate the resistance of bridges to lateral impact loads. The present integrated numerical and experimental study investigates the behavior of a critical connection, between girders and floor beams, in a type of bridge ...
