Migration and regional convergence: An empirical investigation for Turkey

The standard growth model predicts that allowing labour mobility across regions would increase the speed of convergence in per capita income levels and that migration has a negative causal impact on regional growth rates. Although the empirical literature has uncovered some evidence for the former implication, the latter has not been verified empirically. This paper provides empirical evidence for the negative causal impact of migration on provincial growth rates in a developing country with a high level of internal migration characterized by unskilled labour exiting rural areas for urban centres. We utilize an instrumental variables estimation method with an instrument unique to the country examined, controlling for provincial fixed effects.

Regional cost-of-living differentials, rural-urban migration, and the contribution to economic growth
Saraçoğlu, Dürdane Şirin (Wiley, 2019-04-01)
Using a multi-region, multi-sector dynamic model of an economy with rural-urban migration fit to Turkish data, this paper explores the evolution of each region's output and factor allocation as well as inter-regional disparities that emerge with migration. Migration or residence decision of households is endogenous with respect to regional cost-of-living differentials. Results show that migration slows down and dampens the shift of labour from urban manufacturing to services, despite the increase in demand ...
Natural resource policies and standard of living in Kazakhstan
Sakal, Halil Burak (Informa UK Limited, 2015-01-01)
This paper evaluates Kazakhstan's natural resource policies and their impact on the standard of living of the Kazakhstan population within the framework of three determinative factors: globalization and international markets; Soviet legacy and 'resource nationalism'; and Nursultan Nazarbayev and his authoritarian leadership. It argues that natural resource policies of Kazakhstan failed to improve the living standards of the majority of people in Kazakhstan, especially the poor and those living in oil-produc...
Globalization and urban governance in Istanbul
Uzun, Cemile Nil (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-03-01)
Since the 1980s, the topic of governance has been extensively investigated in parallel with the effects of globalization on policy issues. Meanwhile, there has been an increasing fragmentation of responsibilities in the urban arena. Now, the main focus is on new institutional relations and the policy process in which different constituents and agencies participate at both the national and the local level. As a result of the rescaling process of the state, networked forms of governance constitute a new form ...
Displacement and asset transformation from inner-city squatter settlement into peripheral mass housing
Borsuk, Imren; Eroglu, Ensari (SAGE Publications, 2020-04-01)
While slum clearance projects in the Global South have displaced a large number of urban poor from the inner city to peripheral areas, peripheral mass housing estates have been developed as a spatial fix to improve the livelihood of the urban poor through slum development projects. Shifting the focus of displacement and poverty studies on changing assets and social experiences of displacement, this study makes an empirical contribution to the literature with a case study from Turkey. It demonstrates that ma...
Smooth breaks and nonlinear mean reversion in real interest parity: Evidence from East Asian countries
Gülcü, Abdullah; Yıldırım Kasap, Dilem (Informa UK Limited, 2019-08-18)
This study aims to explore the empirical validity of the real interest rate parity (RIP) hypothesis for East Asian countries using Japan as the base country. To this end, we employ the recently proposed unit root tests of Christopoulos and Leon-Ledesma that account for both multiple smooth structural breaks of unknown form and nonlinear mean reversion in the series. Our empirical results uncover overwhelming evidences in favor of the RIP hypothesis for the whole countries in our sample. More specifically, t...
