Regional cost-of-living differentials, rural-urban migration, and the contribution to economic growth

2019-04-01
Using a multi-region, multi-sector dynamic model of an economy with rural-urban migration fit to Turkish data, this paper explores the evolution of each region's output and factor allocation as well as inter-regional disparities that emerge with migration. Migration or residence decision of households is endogenous with respect to regional cost-of-living differentials. Results show that migration slows down and dampens the shift of labour from urban manufacturing to services, despite the increase in demand for urban services. It is also established that rural-urban migration contributes positively to growth while the reallocation of labour within each region proves to be unfavourable.

Migration and regional convergence: An empirical investigation for Turkey
Kirdar, Murat G.; Saraçoğlu, Dürdane Şirin (Wiley, 2008-11-01)
The standard growth model predicts that allowing labour mobility across regions would increase the speed of convergence in per capita income levels and that migration has a negative causal impact on regional growth rates. Although the empirical literature has uncovered some evidence for the former implication, the latter has not been verified empirically. This paper provides empirical evidence for the negative causal impact of migration on provincial growth rates in a developing country with a high level of...
Regional frequency analysis of precipitation using time series clustering approaches
Zaifoğlu, Hasan; Akıntuğ, Bertuğ; Yanmaz, Ali Melih (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2018-06-01)
A regional frequency analysis using L-moments was performed with time series clustering approaches to identify homogeneous regions using dynamic data sets in Northern Cyprus. In this context, the conventional approach, based on station characteristics and different time series clustering approaches, classified as shape-based, feature-based, and model-based, were compared. Hierarchical Ward's method with the correlation-based similarity measure of the feature-based approach was determined as the best method ...
Natural resource policies and standard of living in Kazakhstan
Sakal, Halil Burak (Informa UK Limited, 2015-01-01)
This paper evaluates Kazakhstan's natural resource policies and their impact on the standard of living of the Kazakhstan population within the framework of three determinative factors: globalization and international markets; Soviet legacy and 'resource nationalism'; and Nursultan Nazarbayev and his authoritarian leadership. It argues that natural resource policies of Kazakhstan failed to improve the living standards of the majority of people in Kazakhstan, especially the poor and those living in oil-produc...
Displaced memories, or the architecture of forgetting and remembrance
Sargın, Güven Arif (SAGE Publications, 2004-10-01)
Under the political pressure of Turkey's Modernity Project Ankara's urban-planning processes and its monuments have always been utilized as significant tools of architectural displacement in the expedience of utopias, both socially and spatially. Urban-scale operations since the 1950s, a significant conservative breakthrough as a result of global liberalism and populism, however, have overwhelmed the secular state's organized forgetting, and have increasingly demobilized the capital city's modernist collect...
Cultural actors as agents of generating social co-presences within the place: Istanbul's contemporary art scene
KAHYA, GÜZİN YELİZ; Ataöv Demirkan, Anlı (Informa UK Limited, 2019-06-03)
This paper builds on the designation of cultural actors' actions as a decisive factor in the emergence of urban patterns of art-driven social co-presences in Istanbul. It contributes to the creative city debate from the perspective of community development by incorporating the contemporary arts into urban social space making efforts. Methodologically, the locations of art organizations in the contemporary arts scene of Istanbul are approached as an urban pattern of art driven social co-presences that result...
