Antimicrobial textiles received considerable attention due to public health and personal hygiene concerns. On the other hand, pathogenic microorganisms gain immunity against existing antibacterial products. For these reasons, new and stronger antibacterial agents need to be developed immediately. In this work, silver nanowires (Ag NWs) were decorated onto conventional fabrics via facile and scalable dip and dry method. Antimicrobial activity of the nanowire-decorated fabrics was investigated against a Gram-positive coccus (Staphylococcus aureus), a Gram-negative bacillus (Escherichia coli), a Gram-positive and spore-forming bacillus (Bacillus cereus), and a yeast-like fungus (Candida albicans) via disk diffusion and time-dependent killing methods. The effect of Ag NW content was investigated, and the decorated fabrics showed promising antibacterial activity even with a small amount of Ag NW decoration (0.095 mg/cm(2)). Moreover, decorated fabrics maintained their activity for 24 h. This work shows that Ag NW-modified fabrics can be used as antimicrobial textiles against a wide spectrum of bacteria.

Contest in the boundaries of corporate social responsibility: emergence of nongovernmental systems of labour regulation in the textile and apparel industry
Gündüz, Burcu; Yalman, Osman Galip; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2009)
The thesis investigates the reasons behind the proliferation of non-governmental systems of labour regulation in the textile and apparel industry in the USA, European Union and Turkey. The aim of the study is to identify the main structural factors, strategies and agencies which drive the process for the emergence of these systems within the confines of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) discourse and assess their effectiveness and sustainability as a form of regulation. The thesis concludes that the inc...
Barriers and opportunities for integrating sustainable product design into Ankara small and medium-sized furniture enterprises
Okursoy, Mehmet Erçin; Pedgley, Owaın Francıs; Department of Industrial Design (2012)
The increasing impact of mass production and consumption behaviours have made sustainable product design an important issue in design literature in the last two decades. Studies in the early period focussed on research projects carried out in collaboration with multinational large-sized enterprises, owing to pressures from non-governmental organizations. However, recent studies about sustainable development have pointed out that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) rather than multinationals have a gre...
Co-occurrence of Antibiotic and Heavy Metal Resistance in Kizilirmak River Isolates
İçgen, Bülent (2014-12-01)
Contamination of surface waters with antimicrobials has become an increasing public health concern because of the emergence of multi-resistant pathogens. For this reason, water samples collected from the Kizilirmak River-Kirikkale, Turkey were analysed to learn more about the co-occurrence of heavy metal and antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Resistant profiles were determined by using 26 antibiotics and 17 heavy metals. Out of 290, 24 isolates with both heavy metal and antibiotic resistance were determined...
Silver Nanowire Modified Fabrics for Wearable Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Functional textiles received considerable attention both in scientific field and in the market since late 2000s. Thanks to the developments in nanotechnology, functional textiles have been evolving into smart textiles. In addition to powering the smart textiles, improvement of their washing stability has utmost importance. Currently, batteries are used as the energy sources of smart textiles. However, there are cases where batteries do not fulfill the consumer needs. Moreover, integration of batteries onto ...
Designing an efficient blood supply chain network in crisis: neural learning, optimization and case study
Khalilpourazari, Soheyl; Soltanzadeh, Shima; Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm; Roy, Sankar Kumar (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-06-01)
In recent years, attention to blood supply chain in disaster circumstances has significantly increased. Disasters, especially earthquakes, have adverse consequences such as destruction, loss of human lives, and undermining the effectiveness of health services. This research considers a six-echelon blood supply chain which consists of donors, blood collection centers (permanent and temporary), regional blood centers, local blood centers, regional hospitals, and local hospitals. For the first time, we conside...
