This manuscript presents a methodology for the design of formation flight near Sun-Earth collinear libration points L1 and L2 that are located approximately 1.5 million kilometers from the Earth. The circular restricted three body problem is used for the derivation of the equations of motion. Disturbance due to solar radiation pressure and the gravitational disturbances due to the solar system planets are considered. The Halo orbits are designed for the members of the formation. The proper initial conditions are computed for each of the deputy satellites, positions and velocities that ensure the formation flight for one orbital period of time. In this study, a formation scheme having square shape is analyzed. This scheme has four deputy satellites at corners and one chief satellite at the center. The objective is to analyze the relative motion between deputies and chief regarding to the initial relative position of the deputies. The main purpose is to obtain a stable relative distance between satellites. The results show that the disturbances have important effects on the periodicity and stability of the orbit, as well as on the initial conditions computations. Required formation is maintained during one orbital period of time, year. From the analyses, it is seen that relative distance has a periodic motion; formation scheme periodically narrows and expands around the required relative distance.

Formation flight design using natural dynamics for halo orbiting and earth orbiting spacecraft
Kutlu, Aykut; Tekinalp, Ozan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2020-9)
This thesis presents the studies performed for spacecraft formation flight design and analyses. Two main design problems are addressed in this thesis: First the formation flight design of satellites flying near Sun-Earth collinear libration points; the second the formation flight design of satellites flying at Low Earth Orbit. Thus, formation flight design near Sun-Earth L1 and L2 libration points is investigated first, where solar radiation pressure as well as the gravitational disturbances of the pl...
Verification of empirically determined support systems of the Kılıçlar highway tunnel by numerical modelling
Çelik, Gözde; Topal, Tamer; Department of Geological Engineering (2011)
The aim of this study is to determine the geological and geotechnical characteristics of Kılıçlar Tunnel on Ankara-Kırıkkale Highway, to suggest the appropriate support and excavation systems and verify these suggested support systems via numerical modeling. The length of Kılıçlar Tunnel is 1110 m. The width of tunnel is 16 m, the height is 10 m and the maximum overburden height is 90 m. Since Ankara-Kırıkkale Highway consists of 2x3 lanes, the tunnel is designed as a twin tube tunnel. Kılıçlar Tunnel is pl...
Orbit Control of an Earth Orbiting Solar Sail Satellite
Polat, Halis Can; Tekinalp, Ozan (2022-09-01)
A concept for the utilization of solar sail satellite's propellant-free thrust capability at Low earth orbit (LEO) is proposed and its orbit control strategy is analyzed. Thrust vector control of the sail's normal direction is used to harvest the solar radiation pressure for generating the necessary acceleration to change the orbital elements. The required control vector direction is determined with two approaches. The first approach is realized by approximating the Gaussian Variational Equations at the emp...
Accretion in strong field gravity with eXTP
De Rosa, Alessandra; et. al. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2019-02-01)
In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced “spectral-timing-polarimetry” techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field grav...
Orbit determination strategy and verification for geosynchronous satellites
Köker, Abdulkadir; Tekinalp, Ozan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2019)
In this thesis, the batch and sequential orbit determination procedures for the geostationary satellites are presented. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of the angle only and standard angle-range measurements on orbit determination accuracy. The effect of various factors on estimation accuracy such as measurement frequency, observation duration, and number of observation sites are investigated using the simulated measurement data. Estimation methods namely, nonlinear least square, extended ...
