Cyclostratigraphy and sequence boundaries of inner platform mixed carbonate-siliciclastic successions (Barremian-Aptian) (Zonguldak, NW Turkey)

2007-04-20
Barremian-Aptian shallow marine mixed carbonate-siliciclastic successions of the Zonguldak area (NW Turkey) have been studied in detail along three measured stratigraphic sections. Field and laboratory analysis of microfacies and sedimentary structures have demonstrated that sections are composed of meter-scale shall owing-upward cycles. Cyclicity of shallow water mixed carbonate-siliciclastic successions are generally observed in the form of alternating sandstone/siltstone or sandy limestone and limestone. A prominent level of charophyte packstone within the successions of Zonguldak and Kozlu is interpreted as a sequence boundary. In the Cengellidere section, cyclicity is generally represented by an alternation of sandstone/conglomerate and bioclastic limestone. The first level of conglomerate within the section is interpreted as a sequence boundary. Smaller-scale cyclic arrangements are also recorded within meter-scale cycles. 4th-, 5th- and 6th-order cycles are superimposed and create a hierarchical stacking. However, 6th-order cycles present a relatively random distribution and termed as episodic. Thickness variation of cycles along the section and frequency of sand and/or silt rich cycle types are used to interpret systems tracts within the sequences.

Microfacies analysis of upper devonian - lower carboniferous shallow water carbonates of the Yilanli formation in Zonguldak area, North Western, Turkey
Ahmed, Nouman; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Department of Geological Engineering (2016)
The Yılanlı Formation of Upper Devonian to Lower Carboniferous succession of the Zonguldak region were measured from Gökgöl section near Zonguldak city, NW Turkey. The studied section dominantly consists of limestone of grey – dark grey color with thin to thick beds of black shale and claystone. A variety of lithofacies identified in the studied section including limestone, dolomite, shale, claystone and mudstone. Nine microfacies are identified as grainstone, packstone, wackstone, mudstone, bindstone, ruds...
Foraminiferal biostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy of peritidal carbonates at the Triassic-Jurassic boundary (Karaburun Peninsula, Western Turkey)
Tunaboylu, B. Coskun; Altıner, Demir; İŞİNTEK, İSMAİL; Demirci, D. (2014-08-15)
Continuous shallow marine carbonates spanning the Triassic-Jurassic boundary are exposed in the Karaburun Peninsula, Western Turkey. The studied section (Tahtaiskele section) consists of Upper Triassic cyclic shallow marine carbonates intercalated with clastics overlain by Lower Liassic carbonates. Based on the microfacies stacking patterns, three main types of shallowing-upward cycles have been recognized. Cycles are mostly composed of subtidal facies at the bottom, intertidal/supratidal facies and/or suba...
Seismic stratigraphy of Late Quaternary deposits on the continental shelf of Antalya Bay, Northeastern Mediterranean
Tezcan, Devrim (2006-09-01)
The Late Quaternary sedimentation and structural features of the continental shelf of Antalya Bay (SW Turkey) have been investigated using a single channel high-resolution shallow profiling system. Two seismic units denoted as unit 1 and unit 2 bounded by two major unconformities (R-1 and R-2) have been identified. R-1 and R-2 are type-1 sequence boundaries that formed under sub-aerial conditions during the Late Quaternary sea level lowstands. An acoustic basement (AB) is recognized in the study region; it ...
Stratigraphical, sedimentological, geochemical and cyclostratigraphical analyses of upper cretaceous (upper santonian- campanian) pelagic successions of Haymana and Mudurnu-Göynük basins of the Sakarya continent, Turkey
Afridi, Bakht Zamir; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Department of Geological Engineering (2014)
The Upper Cretaceous (Upper Santonian-Campanian) successions were measured from two different basins of Turkey, Haymana basin and Mudurnu-Göynük basin. The measured Alagöz and Göynük sections are dominantly composed of red marly beds and fine grained siliciclastic green-gray beds with occasional interruption of fine grained turbiditic bedding. A variety of lithofacies are identified in the studied sections, including radiolarian packstone, silty marls, marls, mudstone, claystone, siltstone and fine grained ...
