Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires have been grown on cotton fabric to impart self-cleaning, superhydrophobicity and ultraviolet (UV) blocking properties. ZnO nanowires were grown by the microwave assisted hydrothermal method and subsequently functionalized with steraic acid to obtain a water contact angle of 150 degrees, showing their superhydrophobic nature which is found to be stable up to 4 washings. UV protection of the resulting cotton fabric was also examined and significant decrease in the transmission of UV range was observed. Self-cleaning activity of the ZnO nanowire coated cotton fabric was also studied and it showed considerable degradation of methylene blue under UV light irradiation. These results suggest that ZnO nanowires could form ideal multifunctional coatings for textiles.

Zinc Oxide Nanowire Photodetectors with Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Thin-Film Electrodes
Ates, Elif Selen; Kucukyildiz, Seyda; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah (2012-10-01)
In this study, transparent and flexible zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors prepared via a solution-based method in which single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) thin films were used as transparent electrodes are reported. The photoresponse current was found to be in proportion with the ZnO nanowire density, and the nanowire density could be tuned to increase the photocurrent by a factor of 300. The decay time for the fabricated photodetectors was found to be as low as 16 s. This study su...
Formation and characterization of infrared absorbing copper oxide surfaces
Arslan, Burcu; Erdogan, Metehan; Karakaya, İshak (2017-04-30)
Copper oxide formation has been investigated to combine the advantages of producing different size and shapes of coatings that possess good light absorbing properties. An aqueous blackening solution was investigated and optimum composition was found as 2.5 M NaOH and 0.225 M NaClO to form velvet copper oxide films. A two-step oxidation mechanism was proposed for the blackening process by carefully examining the experimental results. Formation of Cu2O was observed until the entire copper surface was covered ...
Hydrothermally grown zinc oxide nanowires and their utilization in light emitting diodes and photodetectors
Ateş, Elif Selen; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2012)
Zinc oxide, with its direct wide bandgap and high exciton binding energy, is a promising material for optoelectronic devices. Quantum confinement effect and high surface to volume ratio of the nanowires imparts unique properties to them and makes them appealing for researchers. So far, zinc oxide nanowires have been used to fabricate various optoelectronic devices such as light emitting diodes, solar cells, sensors and photodetectors. To fabricate those optoelectronic devices, many different synthesis metho...
Nanoscale surface finishing studies and characterizations of cadmium zinc telluride crystals
Kabukcuoğlu, Merve Pınar; Turan, Raşit; Department of Physics (2016)
Cadmium Zinc Telluride (Cd1-xZnxTe, CdZnTe) crystals are used in two different applications depending on Zinc (Zn) concentrations. CdZnTe crystals are one of the most promising materials for X-ray and gamma-ray detector applications due to unique material properties such as high atomic number and high resistivity. Wide band gap and high stopping potential of CdZnTe crystals allow operation at room temperature for high performance detectors with several applications including medical imaging, astronomy, and ...
LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF ACTIVATED CARBON ADSORPTION AND OZONATION TO REMOVE MICROPOLLUTANTS FROM TEXTILE WASTEWATER
Akdeniz, Ayşe Sena; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2022-8-29)
To avoid potential adverse effects by micropollutants in secondary textile wastewater, it is necessary to apply an advanced treatment process, among which activated carbon adsorption and ozone oxidation are the most attractive alternatives. There is still a lack of studies evaluating the environmental impacts of these processes for the tertiary treatment of textile wastewater. Using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, this study assesses and compares the environmental impacts of ozone oxidation and...
