Thermoelectric (TE) polymers have unique advantages in converting heat into electricity. But their Seebeck coefficient is lower than that of inorganic TE materials by about one order of magnitude. Here, surface energy filtering is proposed to significantly enhance the Seebeck coefficient of TE polymers. The as-prepared poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS, the most popular TE polymer) films from aqueous solution have a low Seebeck coefficient of 15-18 mu V K(-1)and a power factor of similar to 0.008 mu W m(-1)K(-2). Depositing Rhodamine 101, a zwitterion, on PEDOT:PSS films can enhance the Seebeck coefficient to 47.2 mu V K(-1)and the power factor to 401.2 mu W m(-1)K(-2). The Rhodamine 101 effect on the Seebeck coefficient is consistent with its effect on the work function of PEDOT:PSS. The enhancement in the Seebeck coefficient is ascribed to the dipole moment of Rhodamine 101 and the interfacial dipole moment formed at the surface of the PEDOT:PSS films. This is confirmed by theoretical simulations. We call this mechanism surface energy filtering. Surface energy filtering can increase the mean energy of the transporting carriers and thus the Seebeck coefficient of the PEDOT:PSS films while only slightly affecting the electrical conductivity. It can thus significantly enhance the Seebeck coefficient and the power factor simultaneously.

Triangular built-in-storage solar water heater
Al-Shariah, A.M.; Ecevit, Ahmet Berkant; Apaydın, Erdal (Elsevier BV, 1989)
Triangular built-in-storage solar water heaters of different volumes are studied. These is good agreement between the mathematical model and the experimental results. The collectors are observed to operate with high efficiency during the heating period and also during the 24-hour cycle.
Modeling, transient simulations and parametric studies of parabolic trough collectors with thermal energy storage
Akba, Tufan; Baker, Derek Keıth; Güvenç Yazıcıoğlu, Almıla (Elsevier BV, 2020-3-15)
For investigating the system response of parabolic trough collector heat generating system, a plant with parabolic trough collector field and two-tank molten salt thermal energy storage model with component-level control algorithm is developed for managing various working conditions. The model is transient inside the components and responds with hourly weather and demand data. The main purpose of this work is providing an alternative design methodology that focuses on the collector field, and storage size b...
Application of Nanoparticle Antioxidants to Enable Hyperstable Chloroplasts for Solar Energy Harvesting
Boghossian, Ardemis A.; Sen, Fatih; Gibbons, Brenna M.; Sen, Selda; Faltermeier, Sean M.; Giraldo, Juan Pablo; Zhang, Cathy T.; Zhang, Jingqing; Heller, Daniel A.; Strano, Michael S. (Wiley, 2013-07-01)
The chloroplast contains densely stacked arrays of light-harvesting proteins that harness solar energy with theoretical maximum glucose conversion efficiencies approaching 12%. Few studies have explored isolated chloroplasts as a renewable, abundant, and low cost source for solar energy harvesting. One impediment is that photoactive proteins within the chloroplast become photodamaged due to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In vivo, chloroplasts reduce photodegradation by applying a self-repair cycl...
Silver nanowire networks as transparent top electrodes for silicon solar cells
AURANG, Pantea; Doğanay, Doğa; Bek, Alpan; Turan, Raşit; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah (Elsevier BV, 2017-01-01)
Losses caused by the metal top contacts still remain as an issue in crystalline silicon (Si) solar cells. One approach to eliminate shading losses is to utilise transparent nanostructure networks synthesised through rapid and low cost processes. In this work, the potential of highly conductive silver nanowire (Ag NW) networks as transparent top electrodes for the elimination of metallisation process in Si solar cells was investigated. Ag NW top contact cells were found to possess enhanced conversion efficie...
Statistical analysis of solar radiation data
Yilmaz, E.; Cancino, B.; Parra, W. R. (Informa UK Limited, 2007-01-01)
Solar radiation is the most important parameter in the design and study of solar energy conversion devices. The present work is based on statistical analysis of solar radiation data for the city of Valparaiso in the coast region of Chile. Experimental data were obtained from the Santa Maria University in Valparaiso over a five-year period measured by the actinograph and the pyranometer. The error between the actinography values in relation to the pyranometer ones was determined. The most frequent error perc...
