Chatter is one of the major problems in machining resulting in poor surface quality and reduced productivity. Stability diagrams can be used to determine chatter-free process conditions yielding high productivity. For generation of stability diagrams, frequency response functions (FRF) at the tool tip are needed to be used in stability models. Impact tests involving accelerometers are commonly used in FRF measurements. Although mass of a typical accelerometer used in these measurements is extremely small compared with the cutting tool, it can have a significant effect on the FRF measurement. In this paper, the effect of accelerometer's mass on tool point FRFs and stability diagrams is demonstrated for several cases with different tool-to-accelerometer mass ratios by using laser velocity sensor measurements In addition, a structural modification method which can be used to compensate this effect is also presented on several cases The structural modification method can be used to correct the FRFs measured with accelerometers, and thus the resulting stability diagrams

Modelling part dynamicsin machining processes considering material removal
Atlar, Sibel; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007)
Self-excited chatter vibration in machining is one of the most important limitations on utilizing the increasing productivity of modern machine tools. In order to predict stable depth of cuts at high cutting speeds, the stability lobe diagram for a spindle-tool holder-tool combination must be developed. The frequency response function (FRF) of the system must be known for analytical prediction of the stability lobe diagrams. When the flexibility of the workpiece is important, the workpiece itself should be ...
An investigation on dynamic contact parameters in machining center spindle tool assemblies
Özşahin, Orkun; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
In machining centers, with the increasing trends in high precision machining, chatter has become an important problem which results in poor surface finish and low material removal rate. Chatter can be avoided with stability diagrams which provide the stable regions in the machining process for the depth of cut and spindle speed combinations. In order to obtain stability diagrams, tool point frequency response function (FRF) of the system should be obtained. Throughout this study, contact parameters which ar...
Use of inverse stability solutions for identification of uncertainties in the dynamics of machining processes
Tunc, Lutfi Taner; Özşahin, Orkun (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2018-09-01)
Research on dynamics and stability of machining operations has attracted considerable attention. Currently, most studies focus on the forward solution of dynamics and stability in which material properties and the frequency response function at the tool tip are known to predict stable cutting conditions. However, the forward solution may fail to perform accurately in cases wherein the aforementioned information is partially known or varies based on the process conditions, or could involve several uncertaint...
Energy efficiency of machining operations: A review
Moradnazhad, Mariyeh; ÜNVER, HAKKI ÖZGÜR (SAGE Publications, 2017-09-01)
Manufacturing processes are among the most energy intensive on earth. As negative ecological and economic impacts increase, reducing energy consumption is becoming critically important. In this article, a comprehensive overview of energy-saving strategies and opportunities for increasing energy efficiency in manufacturing operations is presented, with a focus on metal cutting processes. The issues and approaches involved in energy efficiency of machine tools and machining operations are reported in the lite...
Proposal and evaluation of a KBE-RM selection system
Munguia, Javier; Bernard, Alain; Erdal Erdoğmuş, Merve (Emerald, 2011-01-01)
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to propose and evaluate a novel tool for the assessment and selection of rapid prototyping (RP)/manufacturing (RM) systems as alternative processes for low-volume production in the machinery and equipment design sector. By analysing previous RP/RM selectors, this research addresses the necessary factors that a knowledge-based engineering (KBE) system must include for the analysis, comparison and ranking of candidate technologies.
