Vein and breccia carbonates precipitated in a highly fractured/faulted carbonate bedrock in SW Turkey were investigated through high-resolution U-series geochronology, microstructural and geochemical studies including C-O-Sr isotope and rare-earth element and yttrium (REY) analyses. Petrographical observations and geochronological data are interpreted as evidence that the calcite veins formed through a crack-seal mechanism, mostly accompanied/initiated by intensive hydraulic fracturing of the host limestone in response to high-pressure fluids, which is manifested by multi-stage breccia deposits. Microscale U-series dates (272.6-20.5 kyr) and geochemical compositions of the vein/breccia samples provide information on the timing and mechanism of the vein formation and identify the source of CO2-bearing fluids responsible for the carbonate precipitation. delta O-18(VPDB) and delta C-13(VPDB) values of the calcite veins range between -5.9 and -1.7%, and -10.6 and -4.6%, respectively. The isotopic compositions of the veins show highly fluctuating values as calcite grew successively perpendicular to vein walls, which, in combination with microstructural and geochronological constraints, are interpreted to reflect episodic CO2 degassing events associated with seismic and aseismic deformation. Oxygen and Sr isotope compositions (delta O-18(VPDB): -5.9 to -1.7%; Sr-87/Sr-86: 0.7082 to 0.7085) together with REY concentrations indicate deep infiltration of meteoric waters with various degrees of interactions mostly with the host limestone and siliciclastic parts of the basement rocks. Oxygen and carbon isotope compositions suggest CO2 degassing through intensive limestone dissolution. While majority of the veins display similar Post-Archaean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalised REY variations, some of the veins show positive Eu-PAAS anomalies, which could be indicative of contributions from a deeply derived, heated, and reduced fluid component, giving rise to multiple fluid sources for the calcite veins. Vein calcite formed in fault-induced fractures offers insights into structural features, genetic characterisation of the parental fluids, and late Quaternary degassing of subsurface CO2 accumulations.

Spatial variations in gas and stable isotope compositions of thermal fluids around Lake Van: Implications for crust-mantle dynamics in eastern Turkey
Mutlu, Halim; Güleç, Nilgün Türkan; Hilton, David R.; Aydın, Harun; Halldorsson, Saemundur A. (2012-03-18)
We investigate the helium (He-3/He-4) and carbon (delta C-13) isotope compositions and relative abundance ratios (CO2/He-3) of gas samples together with the stable isotope compositions of dissolved carbon and sulfur and the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the associated water phase from a number of geothermal fields located around Lake Van in eastern Anatolia, Turkey. The mantle-derived helium component, which is likely transferred to the crust beneath eastern Turkey by recent magmatism, is fou...
Relative involvement of mantle and crustal components in the Agacoren granitoid (central Anatolia, Turkey): Estimates from trace element and Sr-isotope data
Güleç, Nilgün Türkan (1998-02-01)
Trace element contents, together with Sr-isotope ratios on a limited number of samples, are reported for the central part of the Agacoren granitoid in central Anatolia (Turkey), Trace element contents are depicted in terms of Ocean Ridge Granitoid (ORG)-normalized elemental patterns. The patterns display similarities to Volcanic Arc Granitoids (VAG) and/or Collision Granitoids (COLG), and are characterized by enrichment in Large Ion Lithophile (LIL) elements relative to High Field Strength (HFS) elements, n...
Electrochemical behaviour and electrochemical polymerization of fluoro-substituted anilines
Cihaner, A; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar (2002-08-01)
The electrochemical behaviour of three fluoro-substituted aniline monomers, 2-fluoroaniline (2FAN), 3-fluoroaniline (3FAN) and 4-fluoroaniline (4FAN), was investigated in aqueous acidic and organic media by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies. Constant potential electrolysis (CPE) of the monomers in acetonitrile-water mixture (1: 1 by volume) using NaClO4 as supporting electrolyte yielded soluble polymers. The mechanism of electrochemical polymerization was investigated using in situ electron spin reso...
Exposure to sulfide causes populations shifts in sulfate-reducing consortia
İçgen, Bülent (Elsevier BV, 2006-10-01)
The shift in the community structure of a mixed culture of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) at 0.5, 0.75, 1, and 1.5 kg m(-3) sulfide loadings was investigated in an anaerobic continuous bioreactor used for treatment of sulfate-containing wastewater by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), using SRB species-specific and group-specific 16S rRNA-targeting probes. Hybridization analysis using these 16S rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes revealed that sulfide was toxic for Desulfonema, Desulfobulbus spp. ...
Sorption of As(V) from waters using chitosan and chitosan-immobilized sodium silicate prior to atomic spectrometric determination
Boyacı, Ezel; Shahwan, Talal (2010-01-15)
A natural biosorbent containing amine functional groups, chitosan, and a novel sorbent, chitosan-immobilized sodium silicate, were prepared and utilized for the selective sorption of As(V) from waters prior to its determination by atomic spectrometric techniques, namely, hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HGAAS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Chitosan was synthesized from chitin and sodium silicate was used as the immobilization matrix due to its straightforward s...
