Dopant-free carrier-selective transition metal oxide (TMO) contacts offer unique electrical properties pertaining to the rectification of doping-related issues in silicon (cSi) solar cell. In this paper, cSi heterojunction solar cell featuring TMOs of molybdenum oxide (MoOx) and titanium oxide (TiOx) as hole- and electron-selective contacts, respectively, has been realized using Silvaco TCAD. The photovoltaic performance has been evaluated based on the electron affinity of TiOx, its thickness, interfacial charge density, band gap, and operating temperature. MoOx with an appropriate work function prompts band bending leading to Fermi level pinning at top interface. Insertion of TiOx with low electron affinity reduces the rear energy barrier against electrons from 0.86 eV to 0.15 eV. Minimum recombination has been observed for electron affinity values range of 3.6-4.2 eV. The rear interface defects (D-it) should be minimized to reduce the recombination and to facilitate transportation of electrons. The device numerically demonstrated V-oc of 723 mV, J(sc) 39.2 mA/cm(2), FF 79.8%, and eta of 22.64% with temperature coefficient of -0.08%/degrees C. These results validate the applicability of heterojunction design with fully-covered carrier-selective contacts that can be useful for industrial applications as it eliminates the need of doped layers with the associated capital-intensive and complicated fabrication processes.

Effects of different laser modified surface morphologies and post-texturing cleanings on c-Si solar cell performance
Radfar, Behrad; ES, FIRAT; Turan, Raşit (Elsevier BV, 2020-01-01)
Performance of crystalline Silicon solar cells depends on numerous factors. One key factor is a surface structure which can restrict electrical and optical properties due to recombination of generated carriers and reflection of incident light. Surface texturing reduces reflection from a flat surface which increases absorption of light. Anisotropic alkaline etchants are commonly used for texturing mono-crystalline Silicon wafers which produce pyramid structures on the surface. Because of randomly oriented cr...

Substitution of highly doped layers with conventional transparent conductive electrodes as carrier collecting and selective contacts in conventional crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cell configurations is crucial in increasing affordability of solar cells by lowering material costs. In this study, oxide/metal/oxide (OMO) multilayers featuring molybdenum oxide (MoOx) and silver (Ag) thin films are developed by thermal evaporation technique, as dopant-free hole transport transparent conductive electrodes (HTT...

Losses caused by the metal top contacts still remain as an issue in crystalline silicon (Si) solar cells. One approach to eliminate shading losses is to utilise transparent nanostructure networks synthesised through rapid and low cost processes. In this work, the potential of highly conductive silver nanowire (Ag NW) networks as transparent top electrodes for the elimination of metallisation process in Si solar cells was investigated. Ag NW top contact cells were found to possess enhanced conversion efficie...

In this study, highly (1 1 2) oriented crystalline copper indium disulfide (CuInS2) thin films with high mobility have been deposited via ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. Structural and electrical properties of CuInS2 thin films were examined to utilize them in solar cell applications. Various amounts of precursor solution ranging from 0.25 to 2.02 ml/cm(2) were used to form CuInS2 thin films onto the soda lime glass substrates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that all sprayed films were pin...
