One approach to model the high-frequency attenuation of spectral amplitudes of S-waves is to express the observed exponential decay in terms of Kappa (kappa) factor [1]. Kappa is a significant parameter used for identifying the high-frequency attenuation behavior of ground motions as well as one of the key parameters for stochastic strong ground motion simulation method. As of now, there is not a systematic investigation of the Kappa parameter based on the recently-compiled Turkish ground motions. In this study, we examine a strong ground motion dataset from Northwestern Turkey with varying source properties, site classes and epicentral distances. We manually compute kappa from the S-wave portion of each record and study both horizontal and vertical kappa values. We use traditional regression techniques to describe the (potential) relationships between kappa and selected independent variables such as the site class, distance from the source or magnitude of the event. A linear effect of magnitude on kappa is not found statistically significant for the database studied herein. We express the initial findings of a regional kappa model for Northwestern Turkey as a function of site class and epicentral distances. Single station analyses at selected sites confirm the regional model. Finally, we present stochastic strong motion simulations of past events in the region using the proposed kappa model. Regardless of the magnitude, source-to-site distance and local site conditions at the stations, the high-frequency spectral decay is simulated effectively at all stations considered.

Regional Kappa Models on North Anatolian Fault Zone (Turkey) and Their Use in Ground Motion Simulations
Karim Zadeh Naghshineh, Shaghayegh; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül (null; 2015-12-14)
One approach to model the high-frequency attenuation of spectral amplitudes of S-waves is to express the observed exponential decay in terms of Kappa factor. Kappa is a significant parameter used for identifying the high frequency attenuation behavior of ground motions as well as one of the key parameters for stochastic strong ground motion simulation method. Recently, it has been also used in adjusting ground motion predictions from one region to another. Currently, other than a previous study by the autho...
A Regional High-frequency Attenuation (Kappa) Model for Northwestern Turkey
Şişman, Fatma Nurten; Pekcan, Onur; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül (null; 2012-04-17)
The high-frequency attenuation of spectral amplitudes of S-waves is modeled as an exponential decay in terms of Kappa factor (Anderson and Hough, 1984). It is thus an important parameter of soils identifying the high-frequency attenuation behavior of ground motion as well as one of the key parameters for stochastic strong ground motion simulation method. In particular, for regions with sparse seismic networks, it is crucial to use simulated ground motions which require well-defined regional seismic paramete...
Estimation of high-frequency attenuation parameter (kappa) for hard rock stations of Turkish strong motion network
Akgün, Atınç Özgün; Gülerce, Zeynep; Özacar, Atilla Arda; Department of Civil Engineering (2021-2-12)
Site-specific decay in the Fourier Amplitude Spectrum (FAS) at high frequencies, a.k.a. the zero-distance kappa (κ0), is frequently used in seismic analysis of critical infrastructure; especially for the host-to-target adjustment of the design spectrum and the site response analysis. The zero-distance kappa value for hard rock sites is more crucial but harder to constrain because the amount of strong-motion stations on hardrock sites is limited in the global datasets. The objective of this study is to calcu...
Two Higgs doublet model and lepton polarization in the B -> K tau(+)tau(-) decay
Alıyev, Tahmasıb; Savcı, Mustafa; Özpineci, Altuğ (IOP Publishing, 1998-01-01)
The decay width, forward-backward asymmetry and tau lepton longitudinal and transversal polarization for the exclusive B --> K tau(+)tau(-) decay in a two Higgs doubler model are computed. It is shown that the forward-backward asymmetry and longitudinal polarization of the tau lepton are very effective tools for establishing near physics.
Spontaneous polarization close to phase transitions in NaNO2
Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit; Tari, O (2001-08-01)
We give here the calculation of the order parameter and the spontaneous polarization as functions of temperature using the mean field model close to the phase transitions in NaNO2. We have fitted our calculated order parameter to the observed one from the literature. From this fitting, we have then calculated the spontaneous polarization as a function of temperature close to the phase transitions in NaNO2. Our calculated spontaneous polarization is in good agreement with the observed spontaneous polarizatio...
