Design Education for Sustainability A Design Studio Project on the Re contextualisation of the Wind up Radio

2014-01-01
The drive towards globalisation has not only environmental and social implications, as there is a marked effect also on designers and the design process. Today, the mass production of electronic and electrical products is typically outsourced, and it is apparent that most end up being discarded while still functioning properly. With the intention of raising a critical discussion and promoting a reflection on the issues of electronic waste, product longevity and sustainability, the third year industrial design students in the Department of Industrial Design at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Turkey undertook an undergraduate project that aimed at re-contextualising the wind-up radio. This paper presents the conclusions and insights gained from that design education project, in which particular emphasis was on incorporating sustainable design considerations (i.e., localisation, integrated scales of design and production, post-use and engaging design) into the idea generation phase of the product design process.

Experience reflection modelling (ERM) as a generative research method and student engagement in product design at undergraduate level
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla; Department of Industrial Design (2013)
Research approaches driven by design thinking have the potential to bridge early stages of design process to idea generation phases in design education. Generative research is emerged from participatory approach which is used at early stages of design process aims to elicit user needs, experiences, expectations and preferences by using generative tools and techniques through helping non-designer participants express their thoughts, feelings, opinions effectively independent of their skills and abilities in ...
Experience reflection modelling as a generative research method in an educational case for sustainable product design
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (2014-01-01)
A generative research method, namely Experience Reflection Modelling (ERM), has been developed aimed at helping students explore and reflect upon design considerations for sustainability in the idea generation phase of a design process. ERM has been integrated into a product design for sustainability project as part of the design education in the Department of Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University. This paper begins by providing an overview of the generative research approach, explaining its...
Product Design Concept Evaluation by Using Analytical Hierarchy and Analytical Network Processes
Özsoy, Hüseyin Özkal ; Yılmaz Özsoy, Çiğdem (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2018-10-22)
The aim of this study is to improve the success and efficiency of the design concept evaluation and selection activity in industrial design by adapting two specialized evaluation-selection methods to the design process and comparatively demonstrating their use. The methods are called the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Analytic Network Process (ANP). In their application, first the main design objective is decided upon and the evaluation criteria are determined accordingly, followed by the listing ...
Architectural programming for achieving value-added design
Akınç, Günseli; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Architecture (2005)
Values and concerns of project participants have influence on design quality as well as on the design process itself. These determine the functional, social and æsthetic characteristics of the project that are necessary to achieve client satisfaction. The issues of value and quality are compared within the context of architectural programming, including their theoretical and philosophical ground as well as current management techniques. Value and quality can be misunderstood and confused with each other; th...
Sustainability as an Educational Concern: A Study on Industrial Design Curricula
Turhan, Senem (null; 2009-04-09)
With the emergence of sustainability, it became an important concern for curricula of industrial design education as for many other educational structures. Currently, lots of higher education institutions offer courses focusing on sustainability for various objectives. This study deals with the current situation of industrial design education in the world by means of sustainability as an educational concern. It starts with the examination of a variety of sustainable development definitions and continues wi...
