With the emergence of sustainability, it became an important concern for curricula of industrial design education as for many other educational structures. Currently, lots of higher education institutions offer courses focusing on sustainability for various objectives. This study deals with the current situation of industrial design education in the world by means of sustainability as an educational concern. It starts with the examination of a variety of sustainable development definitions and continues with the discussion on the development of sustainability education and its possible effects on the future. The study also presents an overview of the current structures/formations of teaching sustainability in industrial design programs of ICSID member universities by scrutinizing their informational materials and web sites.

Transforming and prolonging design lifespans: design education cases for sustainability
Doğan, Çağla (2017-11-10)
This paper aims to present an approach focusing on design education for sustainability through providing two exemplary cases from third-year industrial design projects. The main themes explored in these projects involve personalization via design transformation, adaption and upgrading during design, use and post-use phases. The first project developed and facilitated at Carleton University, the School of Industrial Design mainly addresses the key theme of transformation of LED lighting from indoors to outdo...
Evaluation of basic design education at METU department of industrial design
Bayırlı, Ümit; Özgen Koçyıldırım, Dalsu; Department of Industrial Design (2015)
Basic Design is a crucial course for design education. This course is offered in the first year to initiate students to the theory, practice and communication of design and to lay a basis on which more advanced and specialized knowledge will be gathered throughout the rest of their design education and careers. However, the course's results, influence in design education and methods of conduct receives many criticisms from students, educators, designers and researchers. Even though the course plays a foundi...
Strategies for an effective university-industry collaboration in industrial design education : a case study of graduation projects
Baysal, Ömer Orhun; Hasdoğan, Gülay Fatma; Department of Industrial Design (2007)
Industrially supported projects, which are an important part of industrial design education, have been carried on with an increasing pace in universities in Turkey for a long time. This thesis develops strategies to improve collaborative projects with industry in industrial design education, by examining how collaboration member benefit from each other’s and which problems do they encounter with collaboration; and to find out what the needs and expectations of all members are through a case study of graduat...
Online distance education: a new approach to industrial design education
Öztürk, Elif; Ünlü, Canan Emine; Department of Industrial Design (2010)
Today, the impact of information technologies on education field is ever more clarified with the integration of new tools and methods to the education. Education has been becoming away from the traditional classroom environment through virtual environment. Besides education of theoretical disciplines, education of practice based disciplines, like design related disciplines are moving toward virtual environments. One of these is Industrial Design (ID) education which also has made the transition to the virtu...
Developing a database of circular design online educational resources.
Bakırlıoğlu, Yekta (null; 2019-10-15)
With the rise, in recent years, of user-generated content and openly available knowledge, many design tools and methods on sustainability and Circular Economy have been developed and self-published online by practitioners and educators. In addition, there are many resources (e.g. policies, reports, tools, etc.) published by non- and intra- governmental organisations with the purpose of promoting sustainable practices and facilitating education for sustainability. While the number of openly available resourc...
