beta-rhombohedral boron carbide (B4C) was deposited on a tungsten substrate from a BCl3-H-2-CH4 gas mixture in a dual impinging-jet chemical vapor deposition reactor. On-line FTIR analysis of the product stream proved the formation of BHCl2 and HCl as by products, in a competing parallel reaction. A maximum of 13% chemical yield of boron carbide was observed, and the yield was found to have increasing trend with an increase in temperature. XRD analysis proved the existence of rhombohedral B4C phase at 1300 degrees C without any other B4C phases or impurities, At this temperature, the formation of 5-fold icosahedral boron carbide crystals up to 30 micron sizes was observed. Such highly symmetric crystalline regions were observed to have a very high hardness value of 4750 kg/mm(2) as revealed from the microhardness analysis. The change in product morphology at low substrate temperatures resulted in a decrease in the hardness values. (C) 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 55: 29142919,2009

Synthesis and Characterization of Aluminum Containing Silica Aerogel Catalysts for Degradation of PLA
Sivri, Seda; Dilek Hacıhabiboğlu, Çerağ; Sezgi, Naime Aslı (Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2019-05-01)
Aluminum loaded silica aerogel based catalysts were synthesized by impregnation of aluminum into silica aerogel produced using sol-gel method in different aluminum loadings (2.5-15 wt%) to investigate their performances in degradation of polylactic acid (PLA).
Dissolution of colemanite and crystallization of gypsum during boric acid production in a batch reactor
Erdoğdu, Anıl; Eroğlu, İnci; Department of Chemical Engineering (2004)
One of the most commonly used boron compounds, boric acid, is produced by dissolving colemanite (2CaO₉3B2O3₉5H2O) in aqueous sulfuric acid whereby gypsum (CaSO4₉2H2O) is formed as a byproduct and must be separated from the main product. This process consists of two steps, dissolution of colemanite and formation of gypsum. The amount of boric acid formed depends on the first step, dissolution of colemanite. In the latter step, gypsum crystals are formed and stay in the reaction mixture to grow up to a size l...
Chemical vapor deposition of boron carbide
Karaman, Mustafa; Özbelge, Önder; Department of Chemical Engineering (2007)
Boron carbide was produced on tungsten substrate in a dual impinging-jet CVD reactor from a gas mixture of BCl3, CH4, and H2. The experimental setup was designed to minimise the effect of mass transfer on reaction kinetics, which, together with the on-line analysis of the reactor effluent by FTIR, allowed a detailed kinetic investigation possible. The phase and morphology studies of the products were made by XPS, XRD,micro hardness and SEM methods. XPS analysis showed the existence of chemical states attrib...
Production and characterization of activated carbon from sulphonated styrene divinylbenzene copolymer
Abdallah, Wisam; Yücel, Hayrettin; Department of Chemical Engineering (2004)
Activated carbon was produced from strong cation-exchange resins, sulphonated styrene divinylbenzene copolymers originally in H+ form, by means of carbonization and steam activation in an electrical furnace. One macroporous resin produced by BAYER Chemicals Inc., Lewatit MonoPlus SP 112 H, was used in the research. Products of carbonization and activation were characterized by using BET, Mercury Porosimetry, Helium Pycnometry and SEM techniques. The effect of carbonization time and temperature on the BET su...
Characterization of BPN Pyrotechnic Composition Containing Micro- and Nanometer-Sized Boron Particles
Koc, Suzan; Ulaş, Abdullah; Yilmaz, Nil Ezgi (Wiley, 2015-10-01)
The effect of micro- and nanometer-sized boron particles on boron-potassium nitrate (BPN) ignition composition was investigated in this paper. As a starting point, thermochemical calculations were made to determine the most promising ignition compositions. Both stoichiometric and fuel-rich formulations of BPN were produced to observe the performance variation due to boron content. Particle morphology of boron particles and the surface structure of the ignition compositions were investigated by SEM. The infl...
