The Munzur and Pulumur streams are essential water supplies of the Tunceli Province (Turkey). Chromite bearing ultramafic rocks and Zn-Cu mineralization products are possible causes of the toxic elements enrichment in the streams. Sediment and soil samples were collected along these streams to determine the level of toxic element enrichment. Multi-element normalized patterns of the samples with respect to the upper crust display enrichments in Cr, Ni, Co, Cs, W, Pb, As, Sb, Au, Hg and Cr, Ni, Co, W, for the Munzur and Pulumur streams, respectively. Also, the calculated Igeo index values show the presence of contaminations of Cr, Ni, As, Hg, Cd and Cr, Ni, As in the Munzur and Pulumur streams, respectively. Elemental grouping in the samples indicates two different effects related to the ultramafic host rocks and mineralization products in the study area. Additionally, mineralogical XRD analyses exhibit the presence of chrysotile, plagioclase, quartz and calcite. The fibrous chrysotile and heavy metal contaminations must be considered as a threat for public health.

Contamination risk assessment for groundwater of the Kucuk Menderes River basin, Izmir, Turkey
Pusatli, OT; Camur, MZ; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2000-04-01)
A new water management plan is needed for the Kucuk Menderes River basin in Turkey, due to increasing water demand and decreasing quality of the groundwater. Vulnerability, quality and risk assessments were performed using a hybrid model containing both hydrogeological and hydrochemical parameters for managing irrigation waters in the basin. The relative contamination (quality) distribution of groundwater at present was established using an irrigation water quality index. The distribution shows the contamin...
Numerical model development for Güzelyurt aquifer, North Cyprus
Demir, Cansu; Ünlü, Kahraman; Akıntuğ, Bertuğ; Department of Environmental Engineering (2018)
Güzelyurt, coastal aquifer, which is an unconfined, is the most important, at the same time the largest drinking, municipal, and irrigational water resource in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). However, the aquifer has exceeded its safe yield capacity due to excessive and uncontrolled pumping over the years and the water quality has been seriously degraded due to seawater intrusion. The “TRNC Water Supply Project”, completed in June 2016, will annually supply about 75 MCM of water via pipeline und...
Investigation Of Waterhammer Problems In Çamlidere Dam - İvedik Water Treatment Plant Pipeline At Various Hydraulic Conditions
Sakabaş, Emre; Bozkuş, Zafer; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Çamlıdere Dam supplies significant portion of the potable water demand of the City of Ankara. Consequently, it is very important that the pipelines extending over 60 km between the dam and the treatment plant at İvedik operate continuously. At present, two composite parallel lines are in operation and construction of a third line is considered for the future. It is the aim of this study to investigate the water hammer problems to be expected under various scenarios and also suggest the safe operation condit...
Integrated Watershed Management for Lake Mogan with the focus of Agricultural Diffuse Pollution
Özcan, Zeynep; Başkan, O; Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem; Kentel, Elçin; Alp, Emre (2015-09-25)
Lake Mogan located 20 km south of Ankara, Turkey has a watershed area of 970 km2, and it is dominated by areas with dry agricultural practices (50%) and graze lands (31%). Intense agricultural activities and fast urbanization rates are the most important factors affecting the water quality in Lake Mogan. There has been several management alternatives suggested to improve the water quality in Lake Mogan. In 2008, the municipality implemented lake augmentation strategy to increase the water level since it dro...
