Computer modeling and earthquake simulation of historic structures and monuments is important for understanding their behavior and for predicting their response for preservation and strengthening studies. This paper focuses on analytical and experimental studies conducted on the historic Aspendos theatre, which is a 2200-year-old structure located in Antalya, Turkey. Concerts and performances are still presented at the Aspendos theatre and the recent usage of high decibel amplifiers during concerts generates an increasing amount of concern about the structural safety of the theatre. A detailed 3D-FE model and on-site dynamic acceleration measurements were used to evaluate seismic performance by response-spectrum and time-history analyses. The same model was utilized to evaluate the resonance conditions of slender and lightly damped theatre walls under sound-induced vibrations by equivalent static loading. The maximum tensile stresses calculated for the earthquake loading were several times the assumed tensile capacity of the material and dead load generated compressive stresses, especially at the base and upper corners of the walls. The building is expected to experience heavy structural damage during a possible large earthquake and it may be assumed that the theatre must have been repaired many times during its lifetime. Sound-induced resonance state stresses were relatively less critical but might still pose danger under rare and unfavorable conditions. Vertical reinforcement placement inside the slender walls would improve the out-of-bending capacity while connecting inner and outer walls by two levels of slab would enhance load transfer mechanisms to the perpendicular side walls and improve the theatre's structural performance.

Predicting the shear strength of reinforced concrete beams using artificial neural networks
Mansour, MY; Dicleli, Murat; Lee, JY; Zhang, J (Elsevier BV, 2004-05-01)
The application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the ultimate shear strengths of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with transverse reinforcements is investigated in this paper. An ANN model is built, trained and tested using the available test data of 176 RC beams collected from the technical literature. The data used in the ANN model are arranged in a format of nine input parameters that cover the cylinder concrete compressive strength, yield strength of the longitudinal and transverse reinforc...
Development and analytical verification of an inelastic reinforced concrete joint model
Unal, Mehmet; Burak Bakır, Burcu (Elsevier BV, 2013-07-01)
Previous experimental research indicated that beam-to-column connections of reinforced concrete (RC) moment resisting frame structures experience considerable deformations under earthquake loading and these deformations have a major contribution to the story drift of the building. In current analysis and design applications, however, the connection regions are generally modeled as rigid zones and the inelastic behavior of the joint is not considered. This assumption gives rise to an underestimation of the s...
Upgrading of slab-column connections using fiber reinforced polymers
Binici, Barış (Elsevier BV, 2005-01-01)
The results of an experimental program on upgrading of reinforced concrete slab-column connections subjected to monotonic shear and unbalanced moment transfer are presented in this study. Externally installed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) stirrups acting as shear reinforcement around the slab-column connection area were used with two patterns of CFRP arrangements. It was found that the proposed method resulted in punching shear capacity increases up to 60% relative to the specimen without any stren...
Seismic vulnerability, behavior and design of tunnel form building structures
Balkaya, C; Kalkan, E (Elsevier BV, 2004-12-01)
Multi-story reinforced concrete tunnel form buildings are one of the common structural types in regions prone to high seismic risk due to the buildings inherent earthquake resistance and ease of construction. Despite their good performance during earthquakes in 1999 in Turkey, and abundance of such structures scattered worldwide, current seismic codes and design provisions provide insufficient guidelines for their seismic design. As a compensatory measure, a series of modal and nonlinear static analyses are...
Quantification and localisation of damage in beam-like structures by using artificial neural networks with experimental validation
Şahin, Melin (Elsevier BV, 2003-12-01)
This paper presents a damage detection algorithm using a combination of global (changes in natural frequencies) and local (curvature mode shapes) vibration-based analysis data as input in artificial neural networks (ANNs) for location and severity prediction of damage in beam-like structures. A finite element analysis tool has been used to obtain the dynamic characteristics of intact and damaged cantilever steel beams for the first three natural modes. Different damage scenarios have been introduced by redu...
