Hopelessness and suicidality in Turkish and American respondents
Gençöz, Faruk; Walker, Rheeda L.; Lester, David (SAGE Publications, 2007-01-01)
In samples of both Turkish and American students, the correlates of suicidal ideation were found to be similar, with depression, hopelessness, and attitudes toward the ownership of life predicting the level of suicidal ideation in both samples. Results using a Western measure of religiosity, however, were different in the two cultures, indicating the need for measures of religiosity specifically tailored for Turkish culture.
A Meta-Analysis of the Effectiveness of Randomized Controlled Positive Psychological Interventions on Subjective and Psychological Well-Being
Koydemir, Selda; Soekmez, Asli Bugay; Schuetz, Astrid (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-01-02)
We conducted a meta-analysis to analyze the effects of randomized controlled positive psychological interventions on subjective and psychological well-being. Our aim was to extend previous research by following a more comprehensive approach in the selection of studies, by including new moderators, by focusing on adult nonclinical populations and increases in well-being, and by comparing the effects of interventions targeting subjective and psychological well-being (i.e., hedonism or eudemonia) or a combinat...
University students' attitudes toward mental patients in a developing country
Eker, Deniz (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1988-12)

In the present study, first year psychology, science, and medical students were compared to see whether psychology students had more favorable attitudes towards mental patients. In addition, the relationship between the medical students' degree of preference for psychiatry and their attitudes was examined. Analysis o...

SAHIN, NH; SAHIN, N (Wiley, 1992-03-01)
The Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS-A) has been used in many studies to measure depressogenic attitudes, vulnerability to depression and to assess the effectiveness of cognitive therapy. Despite its frequent use in research, no data have yet been reported on its item validity. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the item validity and psychometric properties of the DAS-A in the Turkish cultural context. The subjects were 345 university students. The locally adapted versions of the Beck ...
Factors associated with the symptoms of depression and anxiety among male Turkish prisoners: a life crisis and personal growth model perspective
ŞENOL DURAK, EMRE; Gençöz, Faruk (Informa UK Limited, 2010-01-01)
The factors associated with depression and anxiety disorders in the prison populations have been empirically tested in various studies. The aim of the present study was to examine the factors associated with the symptoms of depression and anxiety in a sample of 179 Turkish male prisoners. For this purpose, a model conceptualized by Schaefer and Moos (1998) was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The role of locus of control (as a personality trait); prison type, crime type, time spent in priso...
