Majority of buildings in Turkey and in most developing countries are made with reinforced concrete frames infilled with clay tile brick walls. Despite this, influence of these walls is not accounted for in design. Past earthquake observations have shown that the infill walls have great influence on performance of buildings. In this paper, influence of the brick infill walls on strength and stiffness of RC buildings are presented through analytical results obtained for some typical buildings. Comparison of results showed that stiffness of the walls and their capacity is greatly influenced by the infill walls. The change in the strength and stiffness has been based on ratio of the wall area to the total floor area with providing expressions to determine these.

Out-of-plane seismic behavior of brick and pumice concrete infill walls built into the RC frame
Aktaş, Saime Selin; Canbay, Erdem; Department of Earthquake Studies (2023-1-27)
Unreinforced infill walls are widely used non-structural elements in structures worldwide for architectural and engineering disciplines. The seismic capacity and response of unreinforced infill walls have been ignored until realizing the importance of these members during many seismic events and their aftermaths. Thus, the out-of-plane behavior of infill walls has become a topic that has been popular to investigate in the last decades for civil engineers especially. Although different infill materials are u...
Scale Effect on CFRP Strengthening of Infilled Reinforced Concrete Frames
AKIN, EMRE; Canbay, Erdem; Binici, Barış; Ozcebe, Guney (2015-06-01)
The diagonal application of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer fabrics on hollow clay tile infill walls has been qualified as an efficient rehabilitation method for deficient reinforced concrete frames. However, majority of the experimental studies were conducted on 1/3-scaled RC frames and the effect of specimen scaling has not been questioned. In the current study, the results of an experimental campaign on 1/2-scaled RC frames are presented. Test specimens are grouped in two series having two different aspe...
Seismic Strengthening with Precast Concrete Panels - Theoretical Approach
Baran, Mehmet; Canbay, Erdem; Tankut, Tugrul (2010-01-01)
An economical, structurally effective and practically applicable seismic retrofitting technique has been developed on the basis of the principle of strengthening the existing hollow brick infill walls by using high strength precast concrete panels. The technique would not require evacuation of the building and would be applicable without causing much disturbance to the occupant. For this purpose, a total of eighteen reinforced concrete frames with hollow brick infill walls were tested under reversed cyclic ...
Effects of masonry infill walls on the seismic performance of buildings
Öztürk, Mehmet Selim; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
In Turkey, in most of the reinforced concrete buildings, hallow masonry infill walls are used as a non-structural element, during design stage, their contribution to overall building behavior is not well known. Observations made after the earthquakes revealed that these non-structural elements had beneficial effects on the lateral capacity of the building. In this study, the contribution of the hallow masonry infill walls to the lateral behavior of reinforced concrete buildings was investigated. For this pu...
Evaluation of performance based displacement limits for reinforced concrete columns under flexure
Solmaz, Taylan; Yakut, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Reinforced concrete frame buildings are the most common type of constructions in Turkey which are exposed to various types of forces during their lifetime. Seismic performance of reinforced concrete frame buildings is dominated by columns which can be classified as primary members of these structures. When current codes are considered, all of them contain several provisions in order to implement reliable seismic performances of reinforced concrete columns. In order to evaluate the accuracy of these provisio...
