We describe the design of a low temperature scanning Hall probe microscope (SHPM) for a dilution refrigerator system. A detachable SHPM head with 25.4 mm OD and 200 mm length is integrated at the end of the mixing chamber base plate of the dilution refrigerator insert (Oxford Instruments, Kelvinox MX-400) by means of a dedicated docking station. It is also possible to use this detachable SHPM head with a variable temperature insert (VTI) for 2 K-300 K operations. A microfabricated 1 mu m size Hall sensor (GaAs/AlGaAs) with integrated scanning tunneling microscopy tip was used for magnetic imaging. The field sensitivity of the Hall sensor was better than 1 mG/root Hz at 1 kHz bandwidth at 4 K. Both the domain structure and topography of LiHoF4, which is a transverse-field Ising model ferromagnet which orders below T-C = 1.53 K, were imaged simultaneously below 40 mK. A highly sensitive atomic force microscope for linear measurements of molecular forces in liquids
PATİL, S; MATEİ, G; DONG, H; HOFFMANN, PM; Karakose, M; Oral, Ahmet (AIP Publishing, 2005-10-01)
We describe a highly improved atomic force microscope for quantitative nanomechanical measurements in liquids. The main feature of this microscope is a modified fiber interferometer mounted on a five axis inertial slider which provides a deflection sensitivity that is significantly better than conventional laser deflection based systems. The measured low noise floor of 572.0 fm/root Hz provides excellent cantilever amplitude resolution. This allows us to operate the instrument far below resonance at extreme...
A single-crystal silicon symmetrical and decoupled gyroscope on insulating substrate
Alper, SE; Akın, Tayfun (2003-06-12)
This paper presents a single-crystal silicon symmetrical and decoupled (SYMDEC) gyroscope implemented using dissolved wafer process on an insulating substrate. The symmetric structure allows matched resonant frequencies for the drive and sense vibration modes for high rate sensitivity and low temperature-dependent drift, while the decoupled drive and sense modes prevents unstable operation due to mechanical coupling, achieving a low bias drift. The 12-15mum-thick single-crystal silicon structural layer with...
A low-cost rate-grade nickel microgyroscope
Alper, Said Emre; Silay, Kanber Mithat; Akın, Tayfun (Elsevier BV, 2006-11-08)
This paper presents a low-cost microgyroscope with a resolution in the rate-grade at atmospheric pressure, which is fabricated using a CMOScompatible nickel electrofonning process. Angular rate resolution of the gyroscope is increased by matching the resonance frequencies of the drive and sense modes close to each other using symmetric suspensions and electrostatic frequency tuning; whereas, undesired mechanical coupling between the two modes during matched mode operation is reduced by the fully decoupled g...
A Dual-Resonator Temperature Sensing Approach With Time Base Error Suppression
Kaya, Onurcan; Azgın, Kıvanç (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2020-01-15)
In this study we present a novel dual-resonator temperature sensor which can be embedded in other MEMS sensors for improved thermal compensation and on-the-run calibration. For accurate temperature measurements, the proposed method mitigates time base errors in frequency counting, eliminates the need for a highly accurate reference clock and can cancel out the effects of aging of the time base without using a calibration process. The sensor structure is composed of a strain amplifying beam and two Double En...
An optical fiber radiation sensor for remote detection of radiological materials
Klein, DM; Yukihara, EG; Bulur, Enver; Durham, JS; Akselrod, MS; McKeever, SWS (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2005-08-01)
This paper demonstrates the feasibility of a portable radiation sensor system that uses the pulsed optically stimulated luminescence technique to remotely interrogate an aluminum oxide (Al2O3:C) radiation sensor via an optical fiber. The objective is to develop a system for applications requiring simple and inexpensive sensors for widespread monitoring of ionizing radiation levels, which can be remotely interrogated at regular periods with little or no human intervention and are easy to install, operate, an...
