The study reported in this paper is undertaken to develop a computer simulation and an optimum design and operation strategy for a general storage system. The influence of various design parameters on the total operation cost of the system for a general delivery regime is also studied.

Reliable Transmission of Short Packets Through Queues and Noisy Channels Under Latency and Peak-Age Violation Guarantees
Devassy, Rahul; Durisi, Giuseppe; Ferrante, Guido Carlo; Simeone, Osvaldo; Uysal, Elif (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2019-04-01)
This paper investigates the probability that the delay and the peak-age of information exceed a desired threshold in a point-to-point communication system with short information packets. The packets are generated according to a stationary memoryless Bernoulli process, placed in a single-server queue and then transmitted over a wireless channel. A variable-length stop-feedback coding scheme-a general strategy that encompasses simple automatic repetition request (ARQ) and more sophisticated hybrid ARQ techniq...
Verification of Modular Diagnosability With Local Specifications for Discrete-Event Systems
Schmidt, Klaus Verner (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2013-09-01)
In this paper, we study the diagnosability verification for modular discrete-event systems (DESs), i.e., DESs that are composed of multiple components. We focus on a particular modular architecture, where each fault in the system must be uniquely identified by the modular component where it occurs and solely based on event observations of that component. Hence, all diagnostic computations for faults to be detected in this architecture can be performed locally on the respective modular component, and the obt...
Energy conscious scheduling of a material handling robot in a manufacturing cell
Gürel, Sinan; Akhlaghi, Vahid Eghbal (Elsevier BV, 2019-08-01)
In cyclic scheduling of material handling robots in manufacturing cells, a common approach is to minimize the cycle time objective, which is a measure of the throughput of the cell. In a typical robot move cycle, robot move times constitute a significant portion of the cycle time. During handling operations, robots consume significant amount of energy, which is determined by their speed, load and the distance they travel. In this paper, we propose considering robot speed decisions along with robot move sequ...
Collaborative and Cognitive Network Platforms: Vision and Research Challenges
Onur, Ertan; Hawas, Mohamed Gamal; de Groot, Sonia Marcela Heemstra; Niemegeers, Ignas G. M. M. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-05-01)
In this paper, we present a visionary concept referred to as Collaborative and Cognitive Network Platforms (CCNPs) as a future-proof solution for creating a dependable, self-organizing and self-managing communication substrate for effective ICT solutions to societal problems. CCNP creates a cooperative communication platform to support critical services across a range of business sectors. CCNP is based on the personal network (PN) technology which is an inherently cooperative environment prototyped in the D...
Joint frequency offset and channel estimation
Avan, Muhammet; Candan, Çağatay; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2008)
In this thesis study, joint frequency offset and channel estimation methods for single-input single-output (SISO) systems are examined. The performance of maximum likelihood estimate of the parameters are studied for different training sequences. Conventionally training sequences are designed solely for the channel estimation purpose. We present a numerical comparison of different training sequences for the joint estimation problem. The performance comparisons are made in terms of mean square estimation err...
