Even though intergranular fracture is generally regarded as a macroscopically brittle mechanism, there are various cases where the fracture occurs at the grain boundaries with considerable plastic deformation at the macroscopic scale. There exists several microstructural reasons for grain boundaries to host crack initiation. They can interact with impurities and defects, can provide preferential location for precipitation, can behave as a source of dislocations and can impede the movement of dislocations as well. The understanding of the crack initiation and propagation at the grain boundaries requires the analysis of the grain boundary orientation and the orientation mismatch between the neighboring grains and the related the stress concentration, which is only possible through the combination of micro-mechanical plasticity and fracture mechanics. For this reason the current work studies the evolution of plasticity in three dimensional Voronoi based microstructures through a strain gradient crystal plasticity framework (see e.g. Yalcinkaya et al., 2011; Yalçinkaya et al., 2012; Yalçinkaya, 2016) and incorporates a potential based cohesive zone model (see Park et al., 2009; Cerrone et al., 2014) at the grain boundaries for the crack initiation and propagation. The numerical examples considers the effect of the orientation distribution, the grain boundary conditions, the specimen size and the fracture energy parameter on the intergranular fracture behavior of micron-sized specimens. The study presents important conclusions for the modeling of fracture at this length scale.

Circumferentially cracked bimaterial hollow cylinder under mechanical and transient thermal loading
Kadıoğlu, Fevzi Suat (Informa UK Limited, 2006-12-01)
The analytical solution for the problem of a circumferential inner surface crack in an elastic, infinitely long composite hollow cylinder, made of two concentric perfectly bonded transversely isotropic cylinders is considered. Uniform axial loading and thermal loading in the form of a sudden cooling on the inner boundary are considered. Out of 10 material parameters involved, two bimaterial parameters and three material parameters for each layer upon which the stress intensity factor depends under uniform l...
Compression of solid and annular circular discs bonded to rigid surfaces
Pinarbasi, Seval; Mengi, Yalcin; Akyüz, Uğurhan (Elsevier BV, 2008-08-01)
Although it is noted in the literature that the presence of a central hole in an elastic layer bonded to rigid surfaces can cause significant drop in its compression modulus not much, attention is given for investigating thoroughly and in detail the influence of the hole oil the layer behavior. This paper presents analytical solutions to the problem ofthe uniform compression of bonded hollow circular elastic layers, which includes solid circular layers as a special case as the radius of hollow section vanis...
Contact mechanics problem between an orthotropic graded coating and a rigid punch of an arbitrary profile
ARSLAN, ONUR; Dağ, Serkan (Elsevier BV, 2018-01-01)
Singular integral equation (SIE) and finite element methods are developed for sliding contact analysis of a finite thickness orthotropic graded coating, which is perfectly bonded to an isotropic substrate. Orthotropic stiffness coefficients of the coating vary exponentially through the coating thickness. The coating is assumed to be loaded by a frictional rigid punch of an arbitrary profile. In the SIE formulation, governing partial differential equations are derived in accordance with the theory of plane e...
Elastoplastic analysis of nonlinearly hardening variable thickness annular disks under external pressure
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim; Guven, U (Elsevier BV, 2005-05-01)
Based on von Mises' yield criterion, deformation theory of plasticity and Swift's hardening law, elasto-plastic deformation of variable thickness annular disks subjected to external pressure is studied. A nonlinear shooting method using Newton's iterations with numerically approximated tangent is designed for the solution of the problem. Considering a thickness profile in the form of a general parabolic function, the condition of occurrence of plastic deformation at the inner and outer edges of the annular ...
Multiscale Self-Assembly of Silicon Quantum Dots into an Anisotropic Three-Dimensional Random Network
İlday, Serim Kayacan; İlday, Fatih Ömer; Huebner, Rene; Prosa, Ty J.; Martin, Isabelle; Nogay, Gizem; Kabacelik, Ismail; Mics, Zoltan; Bonn, Mischa; Turchinovich, Dmitry; Toffoli, Hande; Toffoli, Daniele; Friedrich, David; Schmidt, Bernd; Heinig, Karl-Heinz; Turan, Raşit (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2016-03-01)
Multiscale self-assembly is ubiquitous in nature but its deliberate use to synthesize multifunctional three-dimensional materials remains rare, partly due to the notoriously difficult problem of controlling topology from atomic to macroscopic scales to obtain intended material properties. Here, we propose a simple, modular, noncolloidal methodology that is based on exploiting universality in stochastic growth dynamics and driving the growth process under far-from-equilibrium conditions toward a preplanned s...
