Time-wise variation of scouring at bridge abutments

Accurate estimation of the maximum possible depth of scour at bridge C, abutments is important in decision-making for the safe depth of burial of footings. Besides, investigation of the geometric features of scour holes around abutments provides useful information for the degree of scour counter-measure to be implemented against excessive scouring. Experiments have been performed to investigate time-dependent characteristics of scour holes around vertical wall abutments under clear water conditions with uniform bed materials. Temporal variations of scour depth and scour contours were measured. Using this information, an empirical relation was developed for temporal variation of scour depth. Additional relations were also derived for time-dependent volume and surface area of the scour holes around abutments. The findings of this study may provide useful information for preliminary design of abutment footings and placement details of armoring counter-measures, such as riprap.

Dataset on the Marine Sustainability in the United Arab Emirates
Gülseven, Osman (Elsevier BV, 2020-08-01)
This data compiles the relevant indicators on measuring the UAE's attainments towards sustaining marine life and coastal ecosystems. Those indicators are compiled from three databases, namely from the United Nations, BertelsmannStiftung (BS) Foundation, and the Ocean Health Index (OHI). While the UN and BS indicators are widely accepted in measuring sustainability, many of the indicators in these databases are ambiguous and incomplete. The data from OHI is complete and offers a better perspective on measuri...
Investigation of Waterhammer Problems in Wind-Hydro Hybrid Power Plants
DİNÇER, Ali Ersin; Bozkuş, Zafer (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2016-12-01)
Sudden flow changes in confined pipe systems generate transient flow (waterhammer) conditions accompanied with very high or sometimes very low pressures traveling back and forth in the system. Depending on the magnitude of those pressures, pipe collapse or pipe bursting may take place at the weakest points of the system, resulting in costly damages as well as loss of human lives in some cases. In general, it may be encountered in the penstocks of hydropower plants, water transmission lines and water network...
Temporal variation of clear water scour at cylindrical bridge piers
Yanmaz, Ali Melih (Canadian Science Publishing, 2006-08-01)
Computation of temporal variation of clear water scour is important for the design of bridge pier footings. Previous studies indicated that very long flow duration was needed to achieve equilibrium scouring situations. However, the corresponding durations in the prototype conditions may yield considerably larger values than time-to-peak of the design flood. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the temporal variation of scour depth. This study deals with the development of a new semiempirical method for te...
Effects of inclination of bridge piers on scouring depth
Bozkuş, Zafer (2004-08-01)
For a safe design of a bridge pier footing, it is important to estimate the maximum depth of scour as accurately as possible. The aim of this experimental study is to investigate the effects of inclination of bridge piers on local scour depths around bridge piers. Single circular piers inclined toward the downstream direction were founded in a uniform bed material. Near threshold conditions were employed. The results of this study indicate that the local scour depth decreases as the inclination of the pier ...
Overlapping lattice modeling for concrete fracture simulations using sequentially linear analysis
Aydın, Beyazıt Bestami; Binici, Barış; Tuncay, Kağan; Department of Civil Engineering (2017)
Estimation of the crack location and width in concrete structures is important due to the sustained damage in structures as a result of extreme loads and aging. The location and width of cracks are the most influential parameters for making decisions on the structure service life. Despite significant developments, the computational modelling of concrete fracture initiation and propagation are still challenging tasks. Many different numerical approaches, most of them based on finite element analysis, have be...
