This data compiles the relevant indicators on measuring the UAE's attainments towards sustaining marine life and coastal ecosystems. Those indicators are compiled from three databases, namely from the United Nations, BertelsmannStiftung (BS) Foundation, and the Ocean Health Index (OHI). While the UN and BS indicators are widely accepted in measuring sustainability, many of the indicators in these databases are ambiguous and incomplete. The data from OHI is complete and offers a better perspective on measuring the quality of life below water at a country level. This is an interesting case study, which can extend to other countries. The compiled data can be used to make better decisions for future sustainability initiatives in protecting marine life. Interpretation of this data can be found in the article by Gulseven (2020) titled "Measuring achievements towards SDG 14, life below water , in the United Arab Emirates" [1] . (C) 2020 The Author. Atmospheric iridium at the South Pole as a measure of the meteoritic component
Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1987-10)
The measurement of iridium (Ir) in atmospheric samples is important because it gives information on the short-term flux of extraterrestrial material without interference from fragmentation products from large bodies. Such information cannot be obtained from sediment samples, because sediment samples integrate over millions of years and include contributions of large bodies impacted in that time period. In addition to flux information, through the analysis of Ir in atmospheric samples we can also evaluate a ...
Altitude adaptation in Tibetans caused by introgression of Denisovan-like DNA
Huerta-Sanchez, Emilia; et. al. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2014-08-14)
As modern humans migrated out of Africa, they encountered many new environmental conditions, including greater temperature extremes, different pathogens and higher altitudes. These diverse environments are likely to have acted as agents of natural selection and to have led to local adaptations. One of the most celebrated examples in humans is the adaptation of Tibetans to the hypoxic environment of the high-altitude Tibetan plateau(1-3). A hypoxia pathway gene, EPAS1, was previously identified as having the...
An Efficient Parallel Solution Framework for the Linear Solution of Large Systems on PC Clusters
Kurç, Özgür (Tsinghua University Press, 2008-10-01)
In this paper, a parallel solution framework for the linear static analysis of large structures on PC clusters is presented. The framework consists of two main steps: data preparation and parallel solution. The parallel solution is performed by a substructure based method with direct solvers. The aim of the data preparation step is to create the best possible substructures so that the parallel solution time is minimized. An actual structural model was solved utilizing both homogeneous and heterogeneous PC c...
Novel pathways for fuels and lubricants from biomass optimized using life-cycle greenhouse gas assessment
Balakrishnan, Madhesan; Sacia, Eric R.; Sreekumar, Sanil; Günbaş, Emrullah Görkem; Gokhale, Amit A.; Scown, Corinne D.; Toste, F. Dean; Bell, Alexis T. (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2015-06-23)
Decarbonizing the transportation sector is critical to achieving global climate change mitigation. Although biofuels will play an important role in conventional gasoline and diesel applications, bioderived solutions are particularly important in jet fuels and lubricants, for which no other viable renewable alternatives exist. Producing compounds for jet fuel and lubricant base oil applications often requires upgrading fermentation products, such as alcohols and ketones, to reach the appropriate molecular-we...
A dataset on void ratio limits and their range for cohesionless soils
Ilgaç, Makbule; Can, Gizem; Çetin, Kemal Önder (Elsevier BV, 2019-12-01)
A database, which consists of maximum and minimum void ratio limits and their range, particle size, distribution and shape characteristics, is compiled. More specifically, minimum and maximum void ratios (e(min) and e(max)) along with their range (e(max)-e(min)), particle roundness (R) and spherecity (S), fines content (FC), coefficient of uniformity (C-u), mean grain size (D-50) data are compiled from natural cohesionless soils and reconstituted grained material (e.g.: rice, glass beads, mica) mixtures. Th...
