Hydroxypapatite-titania hybrid films on Ti6Al4V alloys were prepared by sol-gel technique by incorporating presynthesized hydroxypapatite (Ca-10(PO4)(6)(OH)(2) or HAp) powders into a titanium-alkoxide dip coating solution. Titania network was formed by the hydrolysis and condensation of Ti-isopropoxide Ti[OCH(CH3)(2)](4)-based sols. The effect of titania sol formulation, specifically the effect of organic solvents on the microstructure of the dip coated films calcined at 500 degrees C has been investigated. The coatings exhibit higher tendency for cracking when a high vapor pressure solvent, such as ethanol (C2H5OH) is used causing development of higher macroscopic stresses during evaporation of the sol. Titania sol formulations replacing the solvent with n-proponal (CH3(CH2)(2)OH) and acetly-acetone (C5H8O) combinations enhanced the microstructural integrity of the coating during evaporation and calcination treatments. Sol-gel processing parameters, such as multilayer coating application and withdrawal rate, can be employed to change the titania thickness in the range of 0.120-1.1 mu m and to control the microstructure of HAp-titania hybrid coatings. A high-calcination temperature in the range of 400-600 degrees C does not cause a distinct change in crystals nature of the titania matrix or HAp, but results in more cracking due to the combined effect of densification originated stresses and thermal stresses upon cooling. Slower withdraw rates and multilayer dip coating lead to coatings more vulnerable to microcracking. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res Part B: Appl Biomater 903: 574-583, 2009

Fabrication of functionalized citrus pectin/silk fibroin scaffolds for skin tissue engineering
Türkkan, Sibel; Atila, Deniz; Akdağ, Akın; Tezcaner, Ayşen (Wiley, 2018-10-01)
In this study, novel porous three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds from silk fibroin (SF) and functionalized (amidated and oxidized) citrus pectin (PEC) were developed for skin tissue engineering applications. Crosslinking was achieved by Schiff's reaction in borax presence as crosslinking coordinating agent and CaCl2 addition. After freeze-drying and methanol treatment, plasma treatment (10 W, 3 min) was applied to remove surface skin layer formed on scaffolds. 3D matrices had high porosity (83%) and interconnec...
Characterization of iron oxide thin films prepared by sol-gel processing
Karakuscu, Aylin; Ozenbas, Macit (American Scientific Publishers, 2008-02-01)
Iron oxide thin films were prepared by spin-coating a gel solution of iron(III) nitrate dissolved in 2-methoxyethanol and acetylacetone on glass and quartz substrates. The film thickness was adjusted by changing the spinning rate of the spin coater, Annealing was carried out between 300 degrees C to 600 degrees C to investigate the phases present in the films. Viscosity of the main solution was found as 0.0035 Pa (.) s by viscosity measurement. TGA/DTA analyses showed that heat treatment should be done betw...

Ni, Siyu; Sun, Linlin; Ercan, Batur; Liu, Luting; Ziemer, Katherine; Webster, Thomas J. (Wiley, 2014-08-01)
In this study, 316L stainless steel with tunable nanometer pit sizes (0, 25, 50, and 60 nm) were fabricated by an anodization procedure in an ethylene glycol electrolyte solution containing 5 vol % perchloric acid. The surface morphology and elemental composition of the 316L stainless steel were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The nano-pit arrays on all of the 316L stainless steel samples were in a regular arrang...

Nanotextured Si fabricated through metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) technique exhibits a promising potential for producing antireflective layer for photovoltaic (PV) application. In this study, a novel single-step nickel (Ni) assisted etching technique was applied to produce an antireflective, nonporous Si (black Si) in an aqueous solution containing hydrofluoric acid (HF), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and NiSO4 at 40 degrees C. Field emission scanning electron microscope was used to characterize differen...
