The nanocomposite materials were prepared using serpentine as filler and polypropylene (PP) as the matrix in the presence of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA) compatibilizer. The melt intercalation was carried out following serpentine modification with a quaternary salt of cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide. The structure of nanocomposites was shown by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. Thermal analysis performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that the nanocomposites have higher percentage crystallinity when compared to neat PP. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed that the storage and loss moduli values of the nanocomposites are better than those of the matrix resin. Tensile properties of nanocomposites are significantly different from PP, e.g., the Young's modulus of the nanocomposite with 2 wt % serpentine and 6 wt % PP-g-MA (PP-2,6Q) was found to be 2065 MPa, i.e., nearly 190.8% increase over the PP matrix. Studies on device properties of an n-AgIn5Se8/p-Si heterojunction diode
KALELİ, Murat; Parlak, Mehmet; Ercelebi, C. (2011-10-12)
In this study, polycrystalline thin films of ternary AgIn5Se8 compounds with n-type conductivity were deposited on p-type Si substrates from the powder of a Ag3In5Se9 single crystal by a thermal evaporation technique. Transport and photo-transport properties of the In/n-AgIn5Se8/p-Si/Al sandwich structure were investigated by analyzing temperature-dependent dc current-voltage (I-V), and photo-response measurements carried out in the temperature range of 200-360 K. In order to obtain the series resistance (R...
A theoretical study on the simplest fullerene, C-20 - an AM1 treatment
Türker, Burhan Lemi (Elsevier BV, 2003-05-05)
Within the constraints of AM1 (UHF) type semiempirical quantum chemical treatment, C-20 and its cationic and anionic forms were considered for their stabilities. The results revealed that C-20 has a greater tendency to act as electron acceptor than a donor. C-20(-) and C-20(-2) were found to be even more stable than C-20.
A Two-Level Homogenization Approach for Polymer Nanocomposites with Coated Inclusions
GÜZEL, DİLEK; Gürses, Ercan (2022-01-01)
In polymer nanocomposites, other than the matrix and inclusion, a third phase so-called interphase, is commonly observed. Inter-phase properties affect the overall macroscopic mechanical behavior. It is crucial to model the interphase and obtain the effective composite properties accordingly. Homogenization theory is very useful and powerful; however, many of the homogenization-based techniques have deficiencies. The goal of the study is to combine two very well-known homogenization techniques to model the ...
Investigation of microstructure-ultrasonic velocity relationship in SiCp-reinforced aluminium metal matrix composites
Gür, Cemil Hakan (Elsevier BV, 2003-11-25)
Twenty-one sets of specimens were fabricated by hot pressing powder mixtures containing various volume and size combinations of pure Al and SiC particles. Neither heat treatment nor secondary deformation processes were applied. The microstructures of the specimens were characterised by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Using a 10 MHz probe, the velocity of ultrasonic longitudinal waves was measured. The results show that in general the ultrasonic velocity increases with an increase in SiC content. H...
A pyrolysis mass spectrometry study of polythiophene - Natural rubber and polythiophene - Synthetic rubber conducting polymer composites
Yigit, S.; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Akbulut, Ural; Toppare, Levent Kamil (1997-01-01)
The thermal behaviors and degradation products of conducting polymer composites prepared by electrooxidation of thiophene using natural rubber or synthetic rubber as the insulating matrix were studied by direct and indirect mass spectrometry techniques. The pyrolysis mass data revealed that a chemical interaction formed between the components of the composites during polymerization. Thermal characteristics of rubbers totally disappeared in the composites indicating presence of some chain scissions leading t...
