In modern buildings, especially in commercial buildings, large glass panels are used as windows. Design of these glass panels is becoming important. Behavior of the thin glass panels is geometrically nonlinear. Thus, analysis needs iterative solution and the solution of nonlinear plate problems with elastic supports necessitates a complete displacement formulation. The authors think that it could be useful to share their experience gained from research on the solution of von Karman equations using lateral displacement and Airy stress function and complete displacement equations using lateral and in-plane displacements of the glass plates since, in the numerical Solution, their convergence looks interesting. Analysis of structural glazing systems
Vallabhan, CVG; Aşık, Mehmet Zülfü; Kandil, K (1997-10-01)
Exterior glazing has been popular in commercial buildings especially in multistory buildings; the glass panels are bonded to the exterior of the building by silicone sealants. Thus, the glazing is identified as ''structural glazing''. Of all the structural glazing systems, the four sided support system is the most critical one. As the glass panels are designed to withstand lateral wind pressures, and when the lateral deflection of the panels increases more than its thickness, the glass plates behave nonline...
Evaluation of the Predictive Models for Stiffness, Strength, and Deformation Capacity of RC Frames with Masonry Infill Walls
Turgay, Tahsin; Durmus, Meril Cigdem; Binici, Barış; Ozcebe, Guney (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2014-10-01)
Buildings with masonry infill walls (MIWs) in reinforced concrete (RC) frames are commonly used all around the world. It is well known that infill walls may affect the strength, stiffness, and displacement ductility of the structural system. Different approaches have been adopted in different codes and guidelines to consider the stiffness and strength contribution of MIWs on RC frame behavior. This study compares the ability of the existing guidelines to estimate stiffness, strength, and deformability of RC...
The Effect of infill walls on the seismic performance of boundary columns in reinforced concrete frames
Fenerci, Aksel; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Reinforced concrete frames with unreinforced masonry infill walls constitute a significant portion of the building stock throughout the world. Infill walls in these buildings are generally considered as non-structural elements and neglected during design and assessment. On the other hand, observations after several earthquakes revealed that infill walls may have detrimental effects on the adjacent frame members. This observation brings out the requirement for further research on the effects of infill walls ...
Evaluation of floor vibration in an existing building
Semerdöken, Yavuz; Yakut, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Vibration serviceability is a major concern in the design of lighter floor systems of newer buildings. Floor vibrations due to walking and rhythmic movements of the occupants should not exceed threshold levels for the comfort of occupants and the protection of sensitive equipment in the buildings. The objective of this study is to evaluate the floor vibration problem reported in a six-story reinforced concrete with two basement floors office building. First, structural system dynamic properties of the build...
Optimum topology design of various geometrically nonlinear latticed domes using improved harmony search method
Carbas, Serdar; Saka, Mehmet P. (2012-03-01)
Domes are elegant and economical structures used in covering large areas. They are built in various forms. According to their form, they are given special names such as lamella, network, and geodesic domes. In this paper, optimum topological design algorithm is presented that determines the optimum number of rings, the optimum height of crown and tubular section designations for the member groups of these domes. The design algorithm developed has a routine that generates the data required for the geometry o...
