Thermal characteristics and kinetics of crude oils and SARA fractions

2013-10-10
In this study, two Turkish crude oils from southeastern part of Turkey and their saturate, aromatic and resin fractions were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The experiments were performed at three different heating rates (5, 10, 15 degrees C/min) under air atmosphere. Two different reaction regions were observed from thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermogravimetry (DTG) curves due to the oxidative degradation of crude oil components. From TGA curves, it was detected that the heavier fraction, resins, lost considerable amount of its initial mass in the second reaction region. While saturates, the lightest part of the crude oil fractions, lost very small amounts of its initial mass in the second reaction region. The kinetic analysis of the crude oils and their fractions were also performed using different kinetic methods. It was deduced that the resins gave the highest activation energy and Arrhenius constant for both reaction regions.

Combustion characteristics and kinetic analysis of Turkish crude oils and their SARA fractions by DSC
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-10-01)
In this study, two Turkish crude oils from southeastern part of Turkey and their saturate, aromatic, resin fractions were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The experiments were performed at three different heating rates (5, 10, 15 A degrees C min(-1)) under air atmosphere. Two different reaction regions were observed from DSC curves due to the oxidative degradation of crude oil components. In the first reaction region, it was deduced that the free moisture, volatile hydrocarbons were evap...
Kinetic analysis of central anatolia oil shale by combustion cell experiments
Iscan, A. G.; Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Bagci, A. S. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-06-01)
In this study, four oil-shale samples (Nigde-Ulukisla) excavated from Central Anatolia Turkey were analyzed where this region is believed to have a high potential of oil in its shale rich outcrops. The samples (similar to 40 g) were combusted at 50 psi gas injection pressure, at an air injection rate of 1.5 L min(-1) in a combustion-reaction cell. All the experiments were conducted up to 600 degrees C. The percentages of oxygen consumption and carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide production were obtained inst...
Novel thermally stable organo-montmorillonites from phosphonium and imidazolium surfactants
Abdallah, Wissam; Yılmazer, Ülkü (Elsevier BV, 2011-10-20)
To circumvent the deleterious early decomposition effects of thermally unstable alkyl ammonium-treated montmorillonites when processed with high-melting-point polymers, high thermally stable salts are used as intercalant agents for sodium montmorillonite rich bentonites of Turkish origin, by an ion exchange reaction to produce organo-montmorillonites with enhanced thermal stability. The bentonite clay was purified by sedimentation, resulting in higher cation exchange capacity and thermal stability in compar...
Supercritical CO2 intercalation of layered silicates
Serhatkulu, Gulay; Dilek Hacıhabiboğlu, Çerağ; Gulari, Esin (Elsevier BV, 2006-12-01)
In this study, we use supercritical CO2 as the processing medium for intercalating the structure of natural clay, Cloisite Na+, and depositing CO2-philic sugar acetate, P-D-galactose pentaacetate, between the layers of the clay. Based on our measurements of the phase behavior of the P-D-galactose pentaacetate-CO2 system, we select two processing conditions: a dense gas solution (DGS) at 40 degrees C and 11.7 MPa with 2.4 wt.% sugar acetate in CO2 and a gas-expanded liquid (GEL) at 40 degrees C and 7.9 MPa w...
Oil shale kinetics by differential methods
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-06-01)
In this research, pyrolysis and combustion behavior of three different oil shale samples from Turkey were characterized using thermal analysis techniques (TG/DTG). In pyrolysis experiments, two different mechanisms causing mass loss were observed as distillation and cracking. In combustion experiments, two distinct exothermic peaks were identified known low and high temperature oxidation. On the other hand, determination of activation energies are required for the estimation of oil extraction conditions fro...
