The influence of vertical ground motions on the seismic response of highway bridges is not very well understood. Recent studies suggest that vertical ground motions can substantially increase force and moment demands on bridge columns and girders and cannot be overlooked in seismic design of bridge structures. For an evaluation of vertical ground motion effects on the response of single-bent two-span highway bridges, a systematic study combining the critical engineering demand parameters (EDPs) and ground motion intensity measures (IMs) is required. Results of a parametric study examining a range of highway bridge configurations subjected to selected sets of horizontal and vertical ground motions are used to determine the structural parameters that are significantly amplified by the vertical excitations. The amplification in these parameters is modeled using simple equations that are functions of horizontal and vertical spectral accelerations at the corresponding horizontal and vertical fundamental periods of the bridge. This paper describes the derivation of seismic demand models developed for typical highway overcrossings by incorporating critical EDPs and combined effects of horizontal and vertical ground motion IMs depending on the type of the parameter and the period of the structure. These models may be used individually as risk-based design tools to determine the probability of exceeding the critical levels of EDP for pre-determined levels of ground shaking or may be included explicitly in probabilistic seismic risk assessments. Seismic response assessment of a stiff structure
Kazaz, I; Yakut, Ahmet; Gulkan, P (Wiley, 2006-05-01)
Seismic response of a lightly reinforced stiff shear-wall structure subjected to ground motions grouped as near- or far-field according to their distance to causative faults is investigated. A model structure that had earlier been studied both experimentally and analytically in the context of a co-ordinated research project is re-examined. The structure is a five-storey lightly reinforced shear-wall model subjected analytically to 55 ground motion records from firm soil sites. Several response parameters ar...
System identification of instrumented bridge systems
Arıcı, Yalın (Wiley, 2003-06-01)
Several recorded motions for seven bridge systems in California during recent earthquakes were analysed using parametric and non-parametric system identification (SI) methods. The bridges were selected considering the availability of an adequate array of accelerometers and accounting for different structural systems, materials, geometry and soil types. The results of the application of SI methods included identification of modal frequencies and damping ratios. Excellent fits of the recorded motion in the ti...
Prediction of input energy spectrum: attenuation models and velocity spectrum scaling
Alici, F. S.; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2016-10-25)
Recent improvements in performance-based earthquake engineering require realistic description of seismic demands and accurate estimation of supplied capacities in terms of both forces and deformations. Energy based approaches have a significant advantage in performance assessment because excitation and response durations, accordingly energy absorption and dissipation characteristics, are directly considered whereas force and displacement-based procedures are based only on the maximum response parameters. En...
Seismic retrofitting of bridges by response modification techniques based on altering bearing fixities
Dicleli, Murat (Informa UK Limited, 2005-07-01)
Feasibility of a proposed seismic retrofitting technique for typical bridges in the Central US has been studied. The retrofitting technique is based on modifying the fixity conditions of the bearings for response modification purposes to eliminate the need for costly retrofitting of substructures. For this purpose, a seismically vulnerable bridge, typical of those in the Central US was selected. Detailed seismic analyses of the bridge were then conducted. It was found that its bearings, wing-walls and pier ...
Seismic energy dissipation in deteriorating systems through low-cycle fatigue
Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2004-01-01)
Energy dissipation characteristics of structural members which exhibit both strength and stiffness deterioration under imposed displacement reversals are investigated. In the experimental part, 17 reinforced concrete beam specimens were tested under constant and variable amplitude inelastic displacement cycles. The constant-amplitude tests were employed to determine the low-cycle fatigue behaviour of specimens where the imposed displacement amplitude was the major variable. A two-parameter fatigue model was...
