Though environmentally responsible behavior (ERB) has been a focus of many studies in the field of environmental education, very few scales have been developed to assess children's ERB. In this regard, this article focuses on the development and validation of Children's Responsible Environmental Behavior Scale (CREBS) and also reports the psychometric properties of this scale. The items in the CREBS were developed initially from the responses to four open-ended items by 229 fourth and fifth grade students. This initial form was pilot tested with 673 fourth and fifth graders and then subjected to exploratory factor analysis. Later, the revised version of the scale was administrated to 2412 fifth graders, and those results were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis and reliability analysis. CREBS consists of 23 items measured using a seven-point Likert-type scale, which have been organized into four sub-scales: political action (six items, alpha = .92); eco-management (six items, alpha = .70); consumer and economic action (five items, alpha = .70); and Individual and Public Persuasion (six items, alpha = .80). Study results indicate that CREBS can be used for exploring the extent to which elementary school students in Turkey demonstrate four types of behavior to help prevent and resolve environmental problems and issues.

Gizir, Cem Ali; Aydın, Gül; Department of Educational Sciences (2004)
The purpose of the present study is to assess the potential individual characteristics and environmental protective factors that promote academic resilience among impoverished eighth grade elementary school students in Turkey. The sample consisted of 872 (439 girls, 433 boys) students enrolled in 6 low SES inner-city public elementary schools in Ankara. Five instruments, Demographic Data Form, Resilience and Youth Development Module (RYDM), Scholastic Competence Scale (SCS), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), a...
Representations of Environmental Literacy: A content analysis of picture storybooks for 48-72-month-old children
Özgül, Tuba; Olgan, Refika; Department of Elementary Education (2022-9-20)
This study aimed to investigate the representations of Environmental Literacy components, including environmental knowledge, affective dispositions toward the environment, environmentally responsible behaviors, and environmental skills, in picture storybooks for 48-72-month-old children. Within the scope of the study, 755 picture storybooks published between the years 2010 and 2021 were investigated through content analysis. The appropriate picture storybooks for the inclusion criteria in the Nasreddin Hoca...

Şahin, Rukiye; Sümer, Zeynep; Department of Educational Sciences (2006)
THE PURPOSE OF THE PRESENT STUDY IS TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF PARENT EDUCATION ON THIRD GRADE CHILDREN'S SOCIAL SKILLS. THE SAMPLE OF THE STUDY COMPOSED OF 29 THIRD GRADE STUDENTS' PARENTS. THE 3X3 EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN WITH TWO TRAINING GROUPS AND ONE CONTROL GROUP AND THREE MEASUREMENTS (PRE, POST AND FOLLOW-UP) WERE USED. THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS RECEIVED A 10 WEEK PARENT EDUCATION WHICH WAS DEVELOPED BY THE RESEARCHER WHILE THE CONTROL GROUP DID NOT RECEIVE ANY TRAINING. IN ORDER TO ASSESS SOCIAL SKILL...
Investigating the Changes in Children's Environmental Attitudes Through Mobile Game Intervention
Tok, Aslıhan Mecbure; Niyazi, Aslı; Yeşilada, Yeliz; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2021-9)
Environmental education has gained significant importance in recent years to increase the new generation's environmental awareness, attitudes, and behaviors with the intention of reducing and preventing the possible destruction of climate change. In Northern Cyprus, most of the studies focused on the relationship between environmental education and environmental attitudes of students at secondary school, high school, and university levels. In this thesis, environmental education has been examined from a fre...
Elicitation, prioritisation, observation: a research model to inform the early design phases with child-centred perspectives
Süner, Sedef; Erbuğ, Çiğdem; Department of Industrial Design (2018)
As children have become active users of diverse range of products and systems, the study of the experiences of child-users has become a specialised field of research, especially in the field of child-computer interaction. This has led to the recognition of children as a special user group with needs and interests different than that of adults. Incorporating child-driven perspectives into early design space is vital to inform the development of design concepts which can deliver meaningful interactions. Howev...
