Zinc borate was prepared from the reaction of zinc oxide and boric acid in the absence or presence of cumene terminated poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride), PSMA, added as a surfactant at varying concentrations (0.1-1 wt.% of water) to the reaction medium to investigate its effect on the growth and agglomeration of particles during reaction. Synthesized zinc borates were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in comparison to unmodified zinc borate. The results revealed that zinc borate (molecular formula 2ZnO center dot 3B(2)O(3)center dot 3H(2)O) formed as irregular platelets. The product retained its hydration water up to 300 degrees C. Surface modified zinc borates, together with boron phosphate, were also employed as a flame retardant for poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET. The flame retardancy of the composites was determined by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) test. Smoke emission during fire, in terms of light transmittance, was also measured. The addition of 3% boron phosphate and 2% PSMA modified zinc borate increased the LOI value of composite materials to 26% from 22.5% of neat PET. Impact strength for the same PET based composite was increased to 11.4 kJ/m(2) from 9.6 kJ/m(2) of neat PET.

Polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl phenacyl pyridinium) salts as photoinitiators for free radical and cationic polymerizations and their photoinduced molecular associations
Taskin, Omer Suat; Erel Göktepe, İrem; Khan, Muhammad Alyaan Ahmed; Pispas, Stergios; Yağcı, Yusuf (Elsevier BV, 2014-07-01)
Polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl phenacyl pyridinium hexafluorophosphate) (PS-b-PVPP) was synthesized by reacting polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) prepared by living anionic polymerization with phenacyl bromide followed by counter anion exchange reaction. The ability of PS-b-PVPP to act as a photoinitiator for both free radical and cationic polymerizations is demonstrated. In the free radical polymerization, the initiation step involves the decay of the excited state of the salt with homolytic bond rupture of...
DEPENDENCY OF NANOFLUID RHEOLOGY ON PARTICLE SIZE AND CONCENTRATION OF VARIOUS METAL OXIDE NANOPARTICLES
YAPICI, Kerim; Osturk, Ozge; Uludağ, Yusuf (FapUNIFESP (SciELO), 2018-04-01)
Impact of the nanoparticle size and concentration on the rheology of ethylene glycol based nanofluids containing nanoparticles of five different metal oxides is investigated. Particle mass concentrations ranged from 5 to 20 wt %. Types of the nanoparticles and their particle size are TiO2 (30 nm, 50 nm), MgO (20 nm, 40 nm), ZnO (10-30 nm, 35-45 nm, 80-200 nm), SiO2 (20-30 nm, 60-70 nm) and CuO (40 nm, 80 nm). A stress controlled rheometer fitted with a cone-and-plate system is employed for the rheological c...
Mn-Cu and Mn-Cu-V mixed-oxide regenerable sorbents for hot gas desulfurization
Karayilan, D; Doğu, Timur; Yasyerli, S; Dogu, G (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2005-07-06)
Porous Mn-Cu and Mn-Cu-V mixed-oxide sorbents prepared by the complexation technique were tested for high-temperature removal of H2S in the presence of hydrogen gas. Sorption experiments carried out at 627 T in a fixed-bed reactor showed higher reactivity and also higher sulfur retention capacity (over 0.15 g of S/g of sorbent) for the Mn-Cu mixed oxide than for the Mn-Cu-V mixed oxide. Successive sulfidation-regeneration cycles demonstrated that the MnCu mixed oxide was also more stable than Mn-Cu-V, maint...
Electrospun amino-functionalized PDMS as a novel SPME sorbent for the speciation of inorganic and organometallic arsenic species
Boyacı, Ezel; Cagir, Ali; Demir, Mustafa M.; Eroglu, Ahmet E. (Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), 2013-01-01)
Sol-gel based amine-functionalized SPME fibers (PDMS-weak anion exchanger) were prepared and used for direct mode extraction of dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), and arsenate (As(V)) from aqueous solutions followed by HPLC-ICPMS determination. Two different methods of coating were employed: (i) electrospinning and (ii) dip coating. Electrospinning was used for the first time for preparation of sol-gel based SPME fibers and was found to be superior in terms of extracted amount of arse...
Chemical vapor deposition of boron carbide
Karaman, Mustafa; Özbelge, Önder; Department of Chemical Engineering (2007)
Boron carbide was produced on tungsten substrate in a dual impinging-jet CVD reactor from a gas mixture of BCl3, CH4, and H2. The experimental setup was designed to minimise the effect of mass transfer on reaction kinetics, which, together with the on-line analysis of the reactor effluent by FTIR, allowed a detailed kinetic investigation possible. The phase and morphology studies of the products were made by XPS, XRD,micro hardness and SEM methods. XPS analysis showed the existence of chemical states attrib...
